Description

Now I will alternate one image of my comic project "Silvia" with one photo or one non-comic drawing (2D or 3D), and this is the turn to photo today! When I just begin to practice photography, I was fascinated by the power of the stenope, this strange simple pinhole that gives images without any lens and with a total depth of field, regardless of the distance between the camera and the subject. 25 years ago I bought my ultrawideangle Pentax 3.5/15, that with its short focal length gave also a very advantageous depth of field. So when I seriously went digital, in 2006, and with the extremely rapid optical progress of digital SLR wideangle lenses, I couldn’t wait buying the fantastic Sigma 4-5.6/10-20, that my friend Richardphotos had enjoyed before, with a series of enchanting shots. With 106° diagonal angle and an unmatched depth of field for a SLR, the zoom created by the lens genius who is Sigma’s manager and mathematician, Dr Yamaki, can do marvels! As soon as I saw this Strombus shell on this seashore, near Perla Blanca, north of Remedios, Cuba, I made this attempt, that I had waited to do for decades. I did just a slight PW in Photoshop CS3 Extended to wipe two grass blades and improve contrast. There is no pasting at all, it is a true photo! I just displaced the shell from three feet.

I dedicate this pict to Fred255, in honor of his gallery which evidences the pleasure he has when he creates images, and for his promotion as the Photography Moderator.

Techdata: Nikon D70 with Sigma 4-5.6/10-20 Pro EX at shortest focal length, 1/250s at f/16 (at the risk of some diffraction with such a short focal length…), aperture-priority mode, auto-white balance, 200 ISO.

To Milouv and Ptitchouette: maybe I have been confusing. NO, I did not displaced the shell under Photoshop, I just carried it IN THE REAL WORLD one meter (3 ft) away of its original place. Therefore it is a TRUE photo and not a photo-manipulation. The only postwork I did were to wipe out two dead grass leaves, to restore the perfect orientation of the horizon line which was somewhat oblique (I know, there are engraved lines on the D70 screen, but often I make slight errors), and to increase slightly the contrast. BTW, I also wiped some dusts, because at Cuba, when one is always busy to change the lens, the CCD is quicky dirty. For my next post I will show a variation of this one and here, undoubtedly, this is a true photo-manipulation.

I rarely care about such semantics as slight flaws and whether it is CGI or natural when in the final review, the image is the thing! This image evokes a quiet peace and that's what it says to me. A very good composition!
