Description
I have mentioned before that we have a bird sanctuary about two to three miles as the Heron flys and that they have a large number of breeding pairs. This one was perched on a close neighbours roof, the picture was taken from my back yard. The blighter was eyeing up my fish pond. Last week we had the netting damaged by something, we didn't see what it was, and lucky no fish disapeared.
I took several shots of this, but this was the best. The tree behind the Heron is home to a couple of Magpies and they are very territorial. I took a shot of one of them attacking the Heron but I was laughing so much at the antics of the Magpie the shot was toatally shaken up. The Heron did leave though and in quite a hurry.
Thanks for stopping by for a look and for any comments you care to leave. Thanks also for your continued support, I know I haven't been around much of late but I will try and catch up with you as and when I can.
May the sun shine down on those of you that want it, and may the rain clouds gather for those of you that need the water. Wouldn't it be nice if we could control the weather, so that it only rained when we wanted it to. Through the night would be ideal.

Well, dear friend, at least you have an interesting thief in your midst. I lost my pond fish - all of them - to that blasted neighbor's cat. Why they can't keep the darn thing in their own yard I don't know but it has dug up 3 newly planted flower beds COMPLETELY and left its business sitting in the dirt to smell up the place and fished my pond to nothingness. That's about $500 worth of damage its done in the 8 months or so its been coming around...always in the dead of night when I can't catch it. But I may put the live trap out, catch it and take it to the shelter! I've tried appealing to the owners and they don't see a problem and they don't see how they can control their cat! Boy, that put me on a rage, didn't it. LOL Well, now, this is a wonderful shot and I like how the roof is so steep that its butt almost puts it sitting on the shingles. Great story and wonderful shot. Sorry for the tirade...

A beautiful bird but one you don't want to see if you have a fish pond. I have one, but have never seen a Heron, ducks, yes, this year and geese, last year. Great shot, guess it's illegal to capture them!

Wow! great capture. Only yesterday I was getting picked up to go to my hospital appointment I saw one flying over near where my flat is, had to look twice. It was heading towards a small fishing lodge close by, further up towards Langley. Very clear picture Jeff, shows up well against the tiled roof considering taken at a distance. Although quite common not something you see every day around a town area.

Excellent capture; I never had a heron in my pond, but the raccoons decimated my fish population!

Cool shot and great tale! I had no idea it was so hard to keep fish (assuming koi here) in ponds, although upon reflections of my fish bowl and my cats....

Glad you've still got your fish! The heron probably comes most days in March and April, but I think there is enough for them in the river by about now. One of my lodgers once said that she'd looked out of her bedroom window early and thought "I don't remember Andrea having one of those bobbing plastic birds by her pond." She didn't tell me for weeks, till I mentioned to her that I'd lost all my fish! I've got a shot of one on my roof, like you I laughed so much at the gulls mobbing it, I didn't get a decent shot. This pic is good, shows the blighter in an urban environment.

Excellent catch!!

What a shot and what problems you have Jeff. I think it is comical almost and also unbelievable (except you have the proof) that a heron is sitting on the roof, next to a satellite antenna, eying the fish in your pond, being harrassed by magpies. Made me laugh out loud. Thanks for sharing, Sig..

Nice capture of nature conforming to domesticated habitat. He definitely appears to be intensely absorbed in his hunt and not at all put off by the urban surroundings. I can sympathize with your plight. I get Blue Herons, Little Green Herons, Kingfishers, raccoons, snakes, snapping turtles, (and heaven knows what else) that all come to feed from my pond. Fortunately, mine is big enough to avoid being totally harvested by hungry critters. I was quite irate shortly after stocking it for the first time and soon realizing I had just laid out a $60 buffet for the local wildlife, lol. It was obvious there nothing to do except hope enough fish could survive so a balance would be achieved and besides, I really enjoyed seeing the new wild life as much as I enjoy lazy fishing, lol. I admit that goldfish ( red carp)do not seem capable of avoiding predators though. Over the years I have tried several times to get a viable population but with no luck. I guess they are too obvious or too slow to avoid being eaten. None last more than a year or so at the most. However, the bream and crappie and several species of minnows have all managed to sustain their populations. Hope you find a suitable compromise and thanks for sharing. Lee

LOL! I got in my car and drove for half an hour and braved rainclouds and a threatening storm to get shots of a heron! I crept down the beach, taking zoom shots all the while, hoping I didn't scare off my quarry. I should have come to your house and just lazed about in the back yard! :) Do you accept holiday bookings? LOL!
