Description

Full size view recommended. I think it's one of those images that "pops" in full size. When I made "My Kingdom", some weeks ago (link below), I already had plans to use that beach and water again. Here it is now, "The Colony". I changed the water and the atmosphere. All buildings made by me (not my talent, really, but I'm learning).

Fantastic render! Very different from what you usually do, but then again, you explore many territories. The water is amazing, love the soft colours, the modelling is perfect for this scene, and the haze adds mystery to this futuristic city.

what strikes me most about this image is how well it works as is. i can tell that it's not very postworked, if at all. most 3d images with no postwork or painted textures wouldn't be right as a book cover. usually, there's something too synthetic for that medium, even if the image is killer. tools like Vue that parametrically generate content and 3rd party content like Poser artists generally use make it even harder to accomplish the same personal feel fantasy and science fiction illustrators achieve. this image has a great composition, majestic buildings and structures, a creative mixture of high technology and nature, technically accomplished atmosphere and sea, and an interesting use of spheres and scale. but what strikes me most of all is the sense that this could be a book cover. that despite the obviously generated rocks and smoke, it feels like an illustration. i can see why so many people have commented on this.
