Description

Taken today on the fence in my garden, I was going out to the car when I noticed this little bunch, I did an about turn and got the camera. The first image is them all bunched together, it had just stopped raining and I think it was a group hug moment, the second one is after I touched the web, they all went wild. The third pic is a bad one but I had to include it, the reason being it was on the same fence post and you can just make out a baby on its back. The nest of spiders, each spider is about 2/3mm in size and I am sure there is over a hundred in this bunch, there was also another one just like this on the next fence post along. The single spider a different colour was about 4mm, so I guess the one on its back to be about 1mm, that is the reason I included it. I went back out to try and get a better shot of this one but unfortunately it had gone. So I am stuck with this, I would not normally post one this bad. Please ZOOM for better detail. I am still playing catch up with signing but I am getting a bit closer. Thanks for stopping for a look and for any comments you care to make. May the sun shine down on you, where ever you are.

Wow, that's a LOT of spiders! I wouldn't have gotten close enough to touch the web -- my stomach would have done some serious backflips! Brave capture!

Fabulous, Jeff! When I had a yellow Volvo estate I found a nest like this on the car, and of course they exactly matched! So I've always called them Volvo spiders which is not very scientific! Their are some good spider ID sites if you need to know the name, my book has something very similar but it says they don't occur in GB, only Belgium, France, Holland etc. I think the left hand pic is superb, shows all the details. Aren't they CUTE!

Just imagine all that silky web that has been spun, that is the main reason for the haze in the first pic.

Gosh! I love that word! PLETHORA...so few people use it these days and its so descriptive. Well, you didn't post this for comments on your language skills so let me just say that your spider captures are great. I know how tiny they have to be. and you have quite the eye to see them and to get captures as good as you did!

Sorry Jeff, you will get a double ebot here but I just tracked it down What are those bundles of tiny yellow spiders with a black spot? Towards high summer and the beginning of autumn, small egg-sized clumps of tiny spiders can be found on webs in the garden and. If disturbed these erupt into a cascading mass of tiny yellow spiders with a black spot on the rear end. These are quite harmless baby Garden Spiders. In late summer or early autumn many spiders mature mate and produce eggs. The common Garden Spider (Araneus diadematus) lays from three to eight hundred yellow eggs that she cements together and covers in a dense layer of coarse protective yellow silk and detritus. When spring comes the following year, bundles of tiny yellow spiderlings with a black spot on their rear end can be found. If disturbed, the bundle of babies will 'explode', with individual spiderlings dispersing away from each other on tiny silken safety lines. Once the danger has passed they climb back up the web and form a clump again. Before emerging from their egg sac, the spiderlings moulted once. Once emerged, they remain together until they have moulted yet again and grown big enough to be independent. http://www.britishspiders.org.uk/html/bas.php?page=faq&faq=17

I love these images! Mostly because all those spiders are in a different country from me. LOL! Also, because this is just some danged fine photography. I don't hate spiders at all, but I can't say I'm fond of walking into a web they've strung between the porch and the pole on the other side of the walkway! As long as they're minding their own business, I'm good with 'em.

Great shots. Spiderlings this small are hard to focus on and you got it right, lol. These are way cool little balls of color. Marvelous find and better captures. The full size view is amazing. Thanks for sharing. Lee
