Description

The color of the lava depends on the type of minerals. In the case of reddish lava rocks, the color is due to the oxidizing of the iron mineral. As for this one, it has a different mineral composition. Depending on the levels of sulfur dioxide concentration will determine if its unhealthy or not for people. At the time we visited this area, it was code yellow or moderate levels. At other times when the level was elevated, evacuation was advised. "click here for levels" . Sulfur dioxide causes irritation of the skin and the tissues and mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, and throat. It chiefly affects the upper respiratory tract and bronchi. Those with heart problems and asthma are more at a risk. Info "Natural Hazards Hawaii" . Aloha and thank you for viewing.

Fascinating stuff! And thanks for answering my question about the hydrogen sulfide. I did not know it could be that dangerous.

This is a very intersting picture of the lava with all of its different shapes, and equally interesting information about its color. I've seen lots of lava here in Oregon but never any this color.

Those worm-like tubes are so interesting. The pile has character and begs to be explored. :-)

Excellent capture of this giant convoluted and tortuous mound of lava! Your description of the sulfur dioxide reminds me of Los Angeles smog.
