Description

Hello again... I seem to be getting a bit back in the swing after a rather long hiatus. Thanks for stopping in, and for all of your comments and encouragement on recent posts. "Song of the Deep" is a character sketch for another piece. I wanted to do a take on the conventional mermaid theme which looked more like an actual undersea creature and less like Daryl Hannah (not that there is anything *wrong* with Ms Hannah). Nevertheless, it had to hit the marks of the mythology, so she still had to be someone capable of attracting the odd sailor (or maybe scientist?). This is a DAZ|Sudio render with postwork in Photoshop CS3. Lighting is Dreamlight's Advanced Studio Lightset (available from the members club), 'Cool' preset with very little tweaking. I also added a pass with the uber-environment light using the bluish preset for some ambient and occlusion, and finally I rendered out a pass with an uberspot with a caustic gel for that 'bottom of the pool' effect. I rendered a Mood Master pass for depth and used that for the DOF blur in photoshop. Postwork consisted of compositing the varisous lighting and mood master passes (with the MM pass shifted to a blueish color). I took a flattened version of that and did a lens blur to get the DOF. I ran the 'Luce' plugin on a copy of that layer to get a bit of volumetric effect and then blended it with the DOF layer. Final adjustments of contrast, brightness and color rounded things out. Production credits: Aquatica Reef from DAZ (I tried using the volumetric prop from that initially, but the shadows came out funny). V4 - Lilith textures with Lost Realms mertail, & creature morphs from DAZ. Dial spins by yours truely :) Plants - Lisa's botanicals Undersea Set from DAZ and Corals from RDNA. Fishies are from DAZ. As always, your constructive critque and comments are most appreciated.

So beautiful and mystical in its creation, a wonderful fantasy rendetion of a mermaid. Rather than the half barbie doll half fish versions you normaly see. Great artistic vision and concept in revitalizing a wonderful mythical creature

beautiful image, and an interesting take on the mermaid. the bright, evenly lit sea says shallows much more than deep, but that's a minor point.

She is stunning! And of course the image is gorgeous, I love the underwater effect you've achieved! It's something I've tried to do in D|S many times and failed miserably, lol. Gorgeous work!

I've been meaning to try using Caustics with the new lights in D/S. I see they work very well. The DoF is very effective. And you did an excellent job of creating a character that is both alien and still beautiful.

Hey, I did an underwater render for my class, a few actually. This so reminds me of it, but yours is a technical coup. I love the way you did textures even under all the volumetric-like atmosphere. Nicely done, sir!
