Description

Hi - thanks for looking in. "Kai Tak Approach" is one of several ideas I was considering for the big Stonemason contest over at DAZ. Ulimately I decided that my being so closely associated with Dreamlight (one of the judges) would probably put some folks in an awkward position so I decided not to enter... not, after looking at some of those entries, like I would have stood a chance, but still... For anyone familiar with civil aviation, the approach to Hong Kong's old Kai Tak airport was legendary, at points it had large jetliners literally at rooftop levels over some parts of Hong Kong. I thought this would be a perfect use for Stonemason's 'Walled City.' The plane is Vanishing Point's jetliner available from Cornucpia 3D. This is a Vue 6i render with full radiosity and spectral atmosphere. The 'Walled City' prop was a straight import from Poser. There are also a couple of hunderd decimated 'Walled City' props painted in an ecosystem around the hero prop to reflect off of the bottom of the plane. Render time was around 65 hours over the course of a week or so... 'resume render' is your friend! Postwork included levels and exposure adjustments and some painting on the clouds to give a little more whispy-ness. Thanks again for looking - hope you enjoyed seeing it as much as I enjoyed making it. As always thanks for your comments and critique!

I love the light and the atmospherics with this, Its quite an un-nerving image perhaps more so due to its realism, thank God most airports are well out of town!

I remember flying into Kai Tak at night, back in 1985... it was a weird feeling, sitting in a huge 747, and looking out sideways into illuminated apartments - on BOTH sides of the jet!

WOW! This really captures the pure insanity of that approach - gone but not forgotten. It's a great image - you obviously put in LOADS of effort (render time aside). The reflections on the belly of the plane are a good touch. Cheers, Evs.

You should have entered any way. It's a great render. As art it reflects life. Perfectly!

Wonderful job, using the extra buildings for the plane reflection was a great idea. San Diego is like this somewhat too. The approaches you are flying past buildings to your side or right over the center of town down to the airport.

Excellent! Yeah, I remember looking UP at apartments on one side and at people in a field (rugby? I was too shocked to notice) at an even level with us on the other. I also remember the taxi drivers who would conveniently forget how to get back to the airport while circling it to drive up the fare. I kind of miss that old airport. Thanks for the flashback!

Awsome! You should of posted it and just put a lil note not to count. I imagine this would fit in very well. I know several pilots that fly international that have talked at some leangth about this and other airports about the world that are 'special challenges'

Woah! The reflections came out great. Good job on the back lighting too. You can still see enough detail to keep the image interesting. Love the PoV too.

I almost fell for this one too. I had to look back at the Vue heading to assure myself it wasn't a photo. Excellent idea and realisation.

Setting up those reflections on the plane's belly sounds like a stroke of genius to me and it seems to have really paid off here. Excellent scene, and I really sympathize with your patience over the render times.

65 hours!!!!!!! Whoa! I've heard of 48, but 65?! Hello, champ! But it's stunning. It really looks like a jet flying overhead. The lighting is just perfect and the angle is fantastic. You have really captured a moment. Great work! So did you live there? Wow, I could not imagine jets screeching over my head that close, every day, every night. How can one sleep? Anyway, enough prattle. I see you are using Vue or maybe you always did. You were the DAZ Jedi, able to pull wonderful images out of Studio. When I saw this, I went like, "Wow, a Studio render that looks like Vue!" Eh! Not! It would have been cool though. Jeff Dehaven was telling me about radiosity. It sounds very technical. But you got it down here. Excellent, excellent image!

Excellent render and great concept. I actually rode that plane a few times into HK. Scary to look out the aircraft window and see office windows flying by.
