Description

Taken at South Lakes Wild Animal Park a fantastic day out for all the family at Dalton-in-Furness near Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, UK. The baby in this shot I believe is just three weeks old. The White Rhinoceros(Ceratotherium simum simum), it is the only species of Rhino that relies totally on grass for food. It is also the most sociable of all the Rhinos with females and young living in small groups. Males will associate with these groups and mate with the females when they are in season. Rhino's rely mostly on their sense of smell and they have rather poor vision. Their hearing however is very good. Thanks for stopping by for a look and for any comments you care to make, good or bad, CC most welcome. May the sun shine down on those that need it and the rains fall for those that are suffering with fires.

I am reminded not to get between a mom and her child and that a friend of mine belonged to a squadron of F4s who had the Rhinoceros as their mascott. Thanks for sharing.

I'm glad you posted this one Jeff, it shows how small baby really is next to the size of mum (compared with my upload) Its a very clear detailed capture. I zoomed in on this to have a closer look at the scuffed hair of the horn on the mother Rhino, looks like the keepers or vets file the sides of the horns down but I wouldn't know for sure!

I really do love the shape of those feet - like clover. The faces are innocent and yet, nothing innocent about their unpredictable behavior.

Adorable and well captured, almost as if posed. I have the privilege of watching these in the wild often. Congratulations! I see you have been on Rosity for just over a year, I hope you will have many more pleasant years to come.
