Description
Captured 7/5/08, around 7:15 AM, exactly .38 miles/.612 kilometers from my semidomesticated dwelling.
This one is for my good friend Babuci, who also posted a similar sunflower the day before yesterday.
This time I came prepared. Using my trusty tape measure, I found the flower spanned 13-inches/33.02cms horizontally from petal tip to petal tip. And the pistil measured across at a whopping 6.5-inches/16.51cms.
The bloom was so huge that its vine was stressed out just holding it aloft.
I like the pistil with its colors, lighting effects, detail and textures.
Incidentally, this was the only flower on this particular plant.
Check it out full size if you are so inclined.
Thankx for the visit, and have a work week of unimaginable proportions.

Our wood chucks would love to make the acquaintance. Sometimes they just stand and sniff the blossums but a tall one like this they might cut down and drag off.

This is simply stunning, Harry! ( I am not sure what you are calling the pistil though, as it doesn't look as if any of them have been pulled out from the centre, to be measured) You've got me confused now! lol DEF; The different parts of the carpels may be fused. In many plant species, the ovaries of the carpels may be fused to form a single ovary and the styles may be fused to form a single style, thus the plant has a single pistil consisting of several fused carpels. Other combinations of fused parts of the carpels are also possible e.g. only the styles may be fused.

cmolsen2002: I just checked out the word carpel in my Webster's New World Dictionary, and found it is indeed and in effect a pistil, or a combination thereof. I don't have the technical acumen to describe it otherwise. Maybe someone among our other viewers can set it straight.

That is the most utterly amazing flower! Looks like it's getting ready to spin off its own galaxy.... Did you have to use a wide-angle lens to get the shot? Wonderful color and texture detail, excellent work!

This is gorgeous! I can hardly believe the size of the thing. Beautiful! I think the technical name for the middle of the flower is "the middle." That's what I would call it. :) Whatever ... your photographs are spectacular, my dear friend. Excellent work!

Yes, the middle of the flower is gorgeous, whatever it's called!! And, FYI, sunflowers ALWAYS only have one bloom per plant, but this one, wow, it outdid itself!!
