On this day in 1932 my town was blown to pieces when a train carrying 1,200tons of dynamite destined for the mines, exploded just outside of town. The explosion happened just beyond where the railway masts disappear into the trees. Read here...
I received so many good comments about my stay in the bush during the previous photo, that I hereby invite all of you to consider an African Safari. Want to contact me? LOL
Thank you for the comments and visits to my previous upload:

If everyone would get together and start a "Send PJ to South Africa on Safari" fund, I'll be there! I'd swoon! I find special meaning in this photo of yours. In 1973, a train carrying bombs through a small town just minutes away, blew up...one car at a time... for several hours. The train's breaks apparently sparked and ignited the railcars. Fortunately, no one was killed, as I recall, but there were many injuries and property damage was heavy. We were 17 miles away and felt the rattle and watched our bedroom curtains poof with each explosion. As it happened we had no idea what was happening and thought perhaps we were being bombed. We locked ourselves in the bedroom and turned on the radio. About 10 minutes into it, the announcement was made that the train was on the tracks in the railyard and it was a 27- car (I think) train full of bombs going off. Even today, they are still finding pieces of the bombs buried in yards and fields. It was only a few years ago they finally dug up the debris that was buried near the tracks from the clean up operations and moved it all to another site as it was found to be toxic. A stellar capture and emotional story.

It is amazing how something bad can create something so beautiful. Great image in itself. Very dramatic. Aloha

A very appropriate and dramatic sky for the telling of the story. I counted my pennies and I'm a few short of a Safari lol...But I take you up on it every other night in my dreams:))The Pink Floydian;0

Excellent!

Another wonderful African sunset, and I agree totally with babuci. Tragic story, though. The same sort of thing happened to Texas City, TX in April of 1947. A merchant ship loaded with fertalizer blew up and set off the oil refineries like a string of firecrackers.

That is one awesome and ominous sky! Incredible work on this one. It does set the mood for the story. I am sorry to hear that this happened and I do hope that the town has recovered from this to some extent. Thank you for the history lesson of your town and for offering the Sarfari tour! I can only dream of doing something so very wonderful!

I was not familiar with the calamitous disaster that occurred way back in 1932. And I thought I was up to date on such events. Eye opening, indeed. Stellar lighting effects in this capture of the partiallly clouded sky, Piet.
