Description

For many years I have admired this beautiful bird on Christmas cards and wrapping paper. So I naturally assumed that this bird only showed itself in winter months. And again I don't know if they are in my home state or not. Imagine my surprise when this bird started showing up. Very skittish and elusive bird from my observation over the past few months...and this was the second time that he landed in the backyard, the first time only a few seconds but this time he hung out quite awhile. Taken from the kitchen window just a day or so before the baby jay. The female comes sometimes too but never stays more than a second or two. Thanks so much for looking, for previous comments and for liking my firsts:-)

Sounds like you are enjoying NY . The cardinal may nest closer to your home another year, then he will be a common visitor. Like the jay, he is not as skittish as he appears when he is only visiting. Home turf makes them comfortable, they get used to you. Spend some time outside when you put out the bird feed if you do. Sit and watch....slow movements and they still come and go but will get used to you. Have fun, great capture

I've never seen one of these, Lynn. Why not try raising the feed tray on something near the window. You might be able to get a more side-on, eye-level type view.

What a beautiful little male! I like the look of the males better because their collur is more vibrant. The female is a more pale red, which is pretty, but still... Great shot, can't wait to see more! :))
