Title: Orderly Confusion
Series: DVC Collection
Location: Our home
Date: February 28, 2008

Camera: Nikon D70, Full Frame
Commentary:
This collage being the second in a series of three was created differently
then ‘Pangaea’ by mixing a variety of smaller pieces of paper from very different sources
together and the purpose here was not to recreate a faithful representation but an artistic
interpretation. This was accomplished by using not only different paper sources, from
fliers, posters and large roadside billboards but using acrylic modeling paste for some
texture; spray paint and metal staples that had rusted in varying degree. Some of the paper
pieces and all of the staples were collected from Berkeley telephone poles, which I have
photographed and posted in the past, with images like ‘The eye that sees you’ and ‘A little
of everything’ to name a few.
This artwork is 10 x 10 inches (25.40 x 25.40 cm) and all the pieces were glued to a gesso-
primed canvas using gel medium. Some individual pieces were given a number of special
coats of medium gel from the underside in order to stiffen the paper and give it shape so
that it appears three dimensional and coming in part off the surface as in real life.

Looks like something you saw walking around, but if I am right there lies a great deal of work and planning behind this creation. I like it very much.

Dear Egmont, this is a very well planned and balanced composition, I like especially the square format and the 3 dimensional look and the use of color. And of cource your title reveals that it is more than just a poster wall but a memory map of someones inner confusion and the bits and peaces and left overs of decisions, experiences, life. Wonderful! Warmest regards, your friend Stefan.

Egmont, after all is said and done, I was trying to find a weak point and I found it: I just wish the top-left yellow was not so dazzling. It's a wonderful work anyway. Nikolay

Egmont, Certainly and quite clearly a collage with great depth, and composed with great care and thought. I like the fact that the tiny fragments that you've compiled are taken from various meaningful and symbolic sources, thus allowing for that "dialectic leap of the imagination" to occur, as Immanuel Kant would have it. I think this is what allows and demands from its viewers for the artistic interpretation to shine through, rather than just a simple re-creation or rendition of something else. Concept and idea are terrific, as your images are always striking and intrigue the imagination.
