Description

Hi thanks for stopping in. Skin Study #9 is the result of some experimentation with the new Human Skin Shader from Omnifreaker, recently available at DAZ. DAZ Studio render with some postwork in photoshop. The V4 Character uses the 'Vanessa' texture set from DAZ. Morphs are 'Nanette' from DM avalable here. The skin setup is basically a port of my pwSurface technique to the new shader. I used the diffuse with a light cyan tint, bump as normal and both specular channels. The first spec has a broad highlight with a dark cyan color and the spec map in the color channel. The second specular channel uses a tighter highlight with a bright cyan at low strength and the specular map in both the color and strength channels. 'Velvet' settings are essentially the same as the 'Elite' presets and the SSS is setup with the SSS map from SkinVue and my usual pwSurface settings. There is also a small amount of mapped reflection in there with the environment map from the 'White Room' product in the map channel and the specular map driving the reflection strength. The M3 character is the HyperREAL texture set available here, morphs are my dial spins. The man's skin is setup about the same as the woman's, but with a bit more red in the diffuse channel and the specular settings turned down. I used the texture, bump, specular and SSS maps from the HyperREAL texture set. Man's hair is 'Reival' and woman's hair is 'Portia,' both from AprilYSH @ DAZ. Shader is Pendragon's free hair shader. Clothes and textures are from DAZ. 'White Room' is available from the Dreamight member's club. Pose is from 'Everlast' by A_ available at RDNA. This project rendered overnight - probably 4 - 6 hours, mostly due to two raytraced lights and the uberEnvironment ambient occlusion rendering against April's hair. When I checked the final render in the morning I realised that the feet were not making proper contact with the ground prop, so I did some reposing. Rather than wait another day I made sure I didn't alter the top half of the figures and just moved the legs and feet. Then I turned off the hair props and re-rendered in a half an hour. I used a gradient mask to composite the two passes in photoshop and got an easy fix to my problem. I also rendered a mask of the background (white BG on black) using Surface Mask Creator and blurred it a little. I applied this layer in screen mode (~30% opacity) to even out the background and simulate a little bloom from the bright whites. It also smooths out some of the aliasing issues D|S seems to have developed lately in high contrast situations. So as this is an experiment with a new skin shader I'm most particularly interested in your reaction to how the skin looks... also really trying to find good settings for 'hyperREAL' so feedback on that is most welcome (I think 'Vanessa' looks great whaever you do to it). Any other commments and critique are most welcome as always. Thanks again

Looks good. I have been arguing with these textures since I got them. I am having a heck of a time getting rid of the orange coloring which it looks like you have done.

this looks absolutely great in the light areas, but a little less great in the shadowed area between them. in my experience and opinion, highly ambient light isn't a great test of a skin shader, because a good texture with no shader at all in very ambient light looks pretty photoreal. a scene with highly directional lighting and lots of dark shadow is where i find a shader shows its true colors. that said, your realism usually far surpasses my best attempts.

Your skins are looking fantastic, as every time. But is the new skin shader worth it's money? I think, You get the same fantastic results wit pwSurface shaders. But the picture is wonderful! Greetings Lemy

Vanessa skin does look great almost all the time. Have applied the skin settings with standard DAZ-shaders to other skins which in all cases made them look better too (Milan, Nanette, and all skins that are sold without the D|S settings (so just for Poser) bennefit from those settings.) Back to your skin.. :) Looks great in this White Room though I must admitt I am slightly distracted by the wonderful curves on the left.. :) Thanks for the insight info my friend!!!

Gorgeous skin textures as always! I'm not sure I see enough difference in the skin with the new Human Skin Shader, to warrant a purchase, this is just MHO. With your skills you make them all look great!

My thoughts almost echo Cimaira's. If I hadn't read your details I would have thought pwSurface. I'd like to see this test done with standard lighting (non IBL) to see how this shader handles. Very good looking render, it's quite natural in appearance. Keep it up my friend, and thanks for the postwork tip.

Oo-la-la! That is awesome. You're giving Poser a run for it's money. I have no idea what you're talking about up there with all the shaders, but it sounds very, very impressive, mister. I have yet to use PW surface shaders because I don't know how to open it, let alone use it. Every time I open it I get the tutorial which is not linked into the image, it's just a tutorial. Pretty sad, huh. What you have up there is so off-the-charts cool. The subsurface scattering is so real. I can only compliment. I can't even begin to tell you how to improve anything. Totally cool, Michael! Kudos for figuring it all out! You and Callad are Daz jedi's. :)

This looks great! Interesting use of cyan. Of course, a fantastic texture can make even a render without any special shaders look real (to an extent). I do see a slight improvement over pwSurface, but Im not sure if thats because of the shader itself or your method in getting it looking realistic. You have an excellent eye for this sort of thing -^ I'm too comfortable with pwSurface to make a change anytime soon -^
