Description

Yes folks this is a real insect. His/her wingspan is approx 5inches wide. The body is about 3 inches. Not something I would want flying in my hair or landing on my arm. I was at the Franklin Mines in Franklin NJ....which btw has the most (28)minerals and ore and gems mined in one area in the country. The owner and his wife had an eclectic taste in things they collected. Insects were one of them. Native American artifacts (having one of the largest collections of arrowheads) Unfortunately, the curator we had didn't know what the name of this insect was as it was his very first tour. Inside this case were some now extinct butterflys and scarabs and some other huge bugs to which he didn't know the name of. LOL.. Kinda looks like a peanut with wings doesn't it?

I expect it to start singing "Feed me Seymore". That is one heck of a face...lol. Was this fellow still alive or just on display in a case? We had flying roaches in Vietnam that were bigger than sparrows.. very loud when flying and very scary to have land on you. Weighed greater than a golf ball or two. Anyway, cool photo Michelle. Bravo and hugs from Dave :^)

What a coll bug. I was so fascinated by it, that I did some googling and found out what it is. Turns out it is a Lanternfly and most probably it is Fulgoria laternaria - The Peanut-headed lanternfly . It is also known as a alligator-headed lanternfly. . Lanternflies are "True Bugs". It is found in Central and South America. The "nose" in front is hollow and it is entirely harmless. Just thought you might be interested. Thanks for sharing. Lee
