I may be wrong on this , I never have seen this fly before, so take my identification conclusion with that in mind. The fly was larger than some of the dragonflies I have been photographing. Sorry the shot is dark, I only got two photos as it was not a patient subject. Hope all have a great Sunday. -GB-

It is indeed a Robber Fly! And a very cool capture. I just got my first of one of these a couple weeks ago. I didn't realize how big they are! HUGE! Good job getting this one.. Did you love the sound of that thing flying off? The one I saw sounded like a military copter. lol.

I am not sure of the exact species but it is indeed a Robberfly. They really range in size from less than 1/2" to over 1" in length. Some are a lot hairier than this one. As NightGallery mentioned, the big ones make a lot of noise when they fly. Thanks for sharing. Lee
