Description

This exotic looking annual plant with large bronze Acer shaped leaves is a real favourite in my garden. The bright red seed pods are striking too, I save these once dried out. They each contain 3 bean sized seeds I keep for next year's crop. They are very poisonous as is all parts of the plant. Some years ago there was a spy story in the press, where someone was assasinated in the street in London. It involved a poison made from these seeds jabbed with an umbrella to administer the poison. Scary stuff!! Anyway this is a close up of the seed pod when fresh and turning red.

Gosh - they look like the fingers and pointy nails of an evil witch. I remember the umbrella stabbing. How could something so absolutely beautiful be so Aaaaargh! Do you have a photograph of the plant too? My False Castor Oil plant is Aralia- pretty harmless I think:-)

My mother also grew castor beans but I never saw the seed. I guess she was diligent about pulling them off as fast as they formed so that no one would accidently eat one. This is a stellar macro. Amazing!
