Description

This is my eldest daughter as she reached the summit of the mine dump. If you look carefully, you can see the layers of sediment. I find it incredible that anything can actually grow on these things, but as you can see - there's grass too!! Some interesting history regarding this little town: Welkom is South Africa's youngest town and has been the centre of the gold fields since 1947. The town sprung up after gold was discovered on a farm called St Helena. The Welkom Goldfields area covers an area of some 330 square kilometres and has supported some 12 gold mines, producing 30% of South Africa's output – making it the fifth largest producer of gold in the world. One of two of South Africa’s gold refineries is situated in the area. First exploited in the late 1940’s, the Welkom goldfield area has seen a decline in production in recent years and a number of mines have been closed. A low cost producer has taken over many of the mines and utilising the most modern mining methods it has extracted gold more efficiently than was possible in the past. Because of this, the Welkom Goldfields have been given a new lease on life and will continue to produce economic gold well into the future, albeit at lower levels than in the past.

A very good capture, great atmosphere in this one! All I remember of Welkom is the traffic circles....! Wow, digging up the past now, as I was only five when we left Virginia! Cheers, Clive
