Description

I've been working on some new characters for my Ishtar series and decided that all my deities needed sharper, clearer eyes and richer skin tones. Hopefully I've achieved some progress and so I present Ereshkigal with her new eyes, new skin tone and her crown of horns as befits her high rank as a primary Mesopotamian Goddess. Thanks to Igolochka, Raiya and Eekdog for their excellent advice on eye work. Their character's eyes are among the best in my books. (I know there is problem with her hair by the horns; I should have done another render to fix it. Sorry Dave.) Before my story proceeds I think we need to step back and take a closer look at Ereshkigal. Why is she considered to be an evil bitch? Understanding her true nature will give deeper insights into this unfolding conflict between passion and justice. Ereshkigal, Ruler of the Underworld, is perhaps the most misunderstood and maligned Mesopotamian Goddess. Because of her role as guardian of the dead, we often think of her as being evil. In fact this is not correct. Ereshkigal was a complex Goddess with many faces. While often hot tempered, impetuous and demanding, like most high ranking Mesopotamian deities, she was also the one who was strictly and absolutely law abiding. She was a tough cookie with a tough job, but she never wavered from it. So although Ereshkigal was never loved by the masses, she was highly respected as the ultimate upholder of justice; she was the essence of absolute truth. Ereshkigal was typically strict and uncompromising, but she was also utterly just. Hers was always the final say. When your time came to stand before Ereshkigal you saw reflected in her eyes your ultimate worth as a human being. And for that reason she was much feared; not because Ereshkigal was inherently evil, but because in her eyes you saw the reflection of your own soul ... who you really were. She showed you the ultimate truth and that is totally terrifying for most of us. I hope that I've captured something of the essence of Ereshkigal in this portrait. Blessed Be. Number 12 in a series. Excellent! She's beautiful and sharp-edged, just as She should be. Your thougths on "evil" are spot-on as well, and very well depicted in this portrait. The idea of "good" and "evil" were post-Babylonian anyway. Historically, you don't find that concept until you get to Zoroastrian and then Biblical traditions. Before that, it was recognized that there is tension and competition in the world - we compete with neighboring cities, and there are forces (such as natural disasters) which cause us discomfort. That doesn't make them "evil", they just have differing concerns. A gazelle may fear a lion. From a human point of view watching them, neither is "evil", they both simply do what they, as natural creatures, must do. Similarly, humans compete with each other; from the point of view of the Gods, our interests are simply in conflict. To Gods, there is no good or evil. There is creation and there is dissolution, and both are necessary, and both follow certain rules. Some of those rules discomfort humans; but if you have a world at all, you must have birth and death. Ereshkigal is a keeper of this awful and terrible and beautiful truth.

Well Roxy. you have surely nailed the eyes! I will be picking your brains very soon now you've had all this great help and info! Ereshkigal sounds a complex character for certain and I am always fascinated by background narratives and it's nice when people read it as well as looking at the picture. Yes you have a slight hair glitch going on, but nothing that cant be fixed with a little postwork, (no need for another render) The horns are perfect and very realistic, All in all its pretty neat work! Okay, finally catching up and it seems I've miseed some beauties while absent. This is an amazing portrait. Well, to give credit where credit is due, her eyes look amazing and very realistic, we can almost see our own reflection in them (or at least it feels that way). All the other details work here as well, the character is beautiful and the expression very natural. I think this is officially my favorite in the series so far. Well done!
