Description

(Please see full-size for a notable difference.) One of the joys of cross-hatch is drawing Ornament. The curves, spirals & tracery are little 'universes' to an artist: They challenge you to find life in the simplest line. At first it's terribly tedious; but after awhile you become transfixed: Each curve is a line of music; each shadow, a plunge through a canyon; each bulbous shape, a small sun; a tail, a leap to the sky...sounds exaggerated, but it's not: Monks spent hours over a single letter, finding--in each line--a special celebration of the sacred. A line of ornament could be a gentle path to heaven. Fact is, you emerge from these exercises feeling you've communed with a little piece of nature, and it's intimate, calming and very satisfying. Materials? Felt pen. Paper? Old invoices. You work with what you have: I drew these on a bus... Hope you enjoy. And thanks again for all comments & favs, I appreciate every one. Peace, Mark (ps--to anyone who saw my earlier post: It was corrupted and I had to remove it. I apologize to those who left comments. I'll repost again soon...)

Mark you are so right about the large view as it really brings out the fine detailing here so well. You are a master at this and I can't even begin to imagine the time or talent it takes.

Oh yes, I enjoy alright. You draw as beautiful as you are writing, Mark. And that says ALOT. These lovely peaces of ornament make my fingers itch for drawing again. Havent done that for months. They looks so awesome.

Mark, I love the way you talk about this. It reminds me of those who paint icons as an act of love and devotion. I like your drawings and the work and concentration it takes. Reminds me of Helle's work for the museum. You really are good in this tecnique.
