Description

Taken at the Open Day on Sunday 7th September, one of the curators of the museum donned an old tunic and brass helmet and posed for me on the running board. They had a short parade of some of the vehicles joined by the Brigades own Pipe Band(shots of them to follow), before the official opening ceremony of the garden and the unveiling of a plaque to commemorate 25 years since the opening of the Museum. Alan had to leave before the parade started, so I dedicate this to him, just a little bit of what he missed. This appliance was delivered to the Manchester City Fire Brigade in April 1940 and cost £1620. The chassis is a Dennis Big 6 ‘Low Loadline’ model and the original engine was a meadows 6 cylinder 115 B.H.P. petrol unit. A Dennis 800 gallons per minute pump is fitted and there is a 40 gallon first-aid tank. The body work is to M.F.B. specification and carries a Morris ‘Ajax’ 60ft wheeled escape. The appliance served originally at London Road Fire Station and saw much action in the blitz. In 1958 the Meadows engine was replaced by a Gardner 6LW diesel engine after which the appliance served on the Brigade reserve fleet until 1963 when it became a training machine, finally being sold in 1974. The appliance is kindly loaned to the G.M.C. Fire Service Museum by Mr Brian Daniel of Hazel Grove, Cheshire. Thanks for stopping by for a look and for any comments you care to make, all are appreciated.

Thanks mate for posting this one that I missed. The guy donning his old Tunic and Helmet gives a great authentic touch to the shot. I recall you telling me that when he posed on the engine you were the first to get shots and soon others gathered with you to snatch a shot for themselves, great stuff Jeff! Bravo. was going to start off with a comment like 'GREAT FOCUS' lol.

What a wonderful old fire engine and history! The uniforms and helmets that they wore back then really made them look like warriors! Very nice capture, Jeff.
