Description
One of the great joys of being an artist is to sit in solitude at the end of the day and sketch a simple object: a flower, a cup, the hand of someone dear...it has none of the demand of big works, it just 'is': a kind of visual prayer... This is one of many mums I've drawn: The Mustard Seed Garden Manual of Painting (17th C. China) said that the essence of the chrysanthemum "originates in the heart and passes through the wrist to the brush..." It adds: "Color cannot convey the idea." (!!!) Black was prescribed to stay close to essences. I don't know that I achieved those essences, but each time I do this I hope I get a little closer...

Lovely and peaceful drawing, Mark. Yes, it is like a prayer.

Such a wonderful Chrysanthemum and I am amazed how you could make it so harmonic in its shape. It is just gorgeous, Mark.

You know Mark I've never heard it described so perfectly as what you just did when you said it was like a (Visual Prayer) and your work is so often like that. This Mum is so beautiful and the passage used to describe it touching. We must also be of the same mind as I recall on your 30th image you were amazed you had 30 in the gallery and couldn't iamgine doing 60 but here you are and congratulations my friend.

Always when see your drawings Mark,I get such a clear image of you, sitting at a table with your robe on, totally engulfed in whatever you are drawing.Yes just as a prayer, or meditaton. I see ikon painters for my inner eye too. It is not the object of your drawing that is essential, but the mood and the concentration on every tiny detal.

Wow... this is truly great work. I have Chrysanthemums in my flower bed but now I see them in a whole new light! Your work looks as if it comes freely from the heart and is no task but a joy... just like a prayer should be. I will try to shoot my mum for you tomorrow. (Lucky I'm not British or that would sound horrible) lol. Blessings to you.

What I find most fascinating is that the flower exists in negative space and derives it's 'color' from it's surroundings.... which is rather interesting, when you think about it. Wouldn't we all be in a 'negative space' if we didn't, metaphorically, have 'colors' to surround us? And do we not tend to become 'colored' by the things that surround us in life? Beautifully done, Mark, and I think you achieved your goal, wonderfully. The 'essence' is all there... strong, centered, and ever-expanding outwards. Perfectly composed, as well, weighted to the right, so that our eye follows the stem, up into the bloom, and then outward and off into that lovely golden universe. Happy 60th, my friend!- M :^)
