Description

My late friend Dianne taught me this when she'd broken her drawing hand: Dry brush with washes press it against glass shine light behind it and photograph. Print & highlight edges... I have a sprained hand so I tried this last night. * * * * * *
To native cultures, weeds contained the universe. Each carried medicine and healing. I spent months studying these things with an Ojibway woman. I may not be here as regularly as before...but this image is to celebrate many things: the sacredness of a beloved friend, the sacredness of the overlooked (weeds) and how you can make art with whatever's lying around, or at least you can try...
Thanks for stopping by my gallery, it always makes a difference to me. I wish everyone's a sweet, splendid fall. Much peace, Mark PS: Full-size shows the effect much better.

I was wondering how you got that effect on the window. It is beautiful. I hope your hand heals quickly.

Simply stunning Mark and knowing all that is going on behind the scenes to create this image made it so meaningful. Your late friend Dianne sounds like a wonderful lady to teach you this wonderful method of creating art even with a injured hand. I am sorry for her passing but so glad you honor her by sharing this with us. Please take care Mark and come around only when you are able.

The life forces still flow through your hand, injured or not! This is really too beautiful to be a "weed", though my recent upload was also focused on weeds. Nice connection, eh? :-) I love how it sits so peacefully, happy in itself. The one branch being bent or broken adds to the diagonal lines that create movement in a work with no breeze. It sweeps my eye gently upward to the right and brings it back again to rest in the center for a bit before I get planted in the roots. I'm sorry to hear about the sprain. Healing vibes your direction.

I remember a friend of mine elegantly stating: "Weeds are just flowers that nobody wants," and I always tend to think of weeds that way. Usually it's the "unwanted" or "overlooked" that contain the most surprises in life, all of the hidden jewels. This image is a jewel. I love the elegance of it and I'm reminded of Japanese art when I look at it. The off-white is so warm and inviting, and the contrast of the bold, black (and softer shades of gray) are intriguingly complex. The whole is a gorgeous work of art that I'm glad I saw here.

Before I read your notes, I was going to say this looks like a painting on glass lit from behind... and what do you know? It is, lol. I guess I'm so jaded by PS at this point, I think almost everything is a special effect and never the actual 'real' thing. ;^) Anyway, it's beautiful. I'm glad you found such a wonderful way to express yourself whilst on the mend. Sometimes accidents and such can lead you somewhere you may have never gone before, and can ultimately turn out to have been a positive experience. I have a feeling it will be that way for you. Excellent done, my Mark. You've honored your friend and the lessons of the Ojibwe woman most admirably with this. -M :^)

Elegant work, both in execution and technique. A wonderful balance of symmetry and form - I do so adore these simple and quite expressive images of yours.

Art has not to be hard...but inventive. With your experiment you did a beautiful and careful artwork full of meanings. Wonderful B/W to celebrate.

I love your design and the commentary. Thanks for explaining your method, too. Incredible work. It has such a delicate movement as do all of these drawings you do, but this one is special due to the technique and lighting.
