Description

A brief departure from my alien plant series(don't worry, more will come soon!)...this time a continuation of my terrain texturing.I was inspired by the recent works of photostar,miska7 and others who have posted snowy scenes recently, and decided to try my own.I'm not too fond of the preset snowy terrain mats in Bryce, although there are a few artists who have had excellent results using them...I was after something a little more realistic. So,the title not only refers to the scene itself, but my first attempt at a custom mat.Hera's how I did it... First I chose the preset mat "tundra snow" and this appeared in the "A" channel in the diffuse column.Control-clicking in the "B" channel in diffuse,I chose a photo texture from cgtextures.com(which I made tileable)and transformed the size to 30%.Control-clicking the "C" channel,I clicked the top right arrow on C's material box,and under "Basic" procedural I chose "foamwater" and set the size to -2%.Control-clicking all three channels in the bump column,I then rendered the terrain. Some adjustments in size for each terrain(there are five in the scene)...negative sizes for closer terrains and positive sizes around 5-7% for the distant terrains, and there we are!The trees are a combination of a preset dead tree, arbaro trees #2 and #3 from jrcejasplido(with all but one's leaves removed) and a snowy pine from Clay's Bryce Preset Trees(from Daz3D)...rendered in a combination technique the same as the terrains, only a tree bark photo. The raven is from Noggins(also from Daz3D)and was posed in DazStudio. The sky is a customized preset,as is the light and atmo. Thanks for your viewing and comments...hope you like this attempt!

A good effort, but I'm not sure the snow on the slopes looks too realistic. Out here, the snow starts at the highest levels and won't stick to anything as steep as those peaks. I think you should play in the DTE with altitude and slope based textures to get the right effect. Sometimes it helps to superimpose two nearly terrains onto of another use different textures on each. Jsut some suggestions. The foreground snow looks great, though.

Nice texture to the foreground snow, Neil. Addition of the raven adds depth and a bit of motion, as well.
