Description

Here's more from my natural textures file. These are branches on a monkey puzzle tree that I found at the Evergreen Cemetery. For those of you who were mystified by the whole baby shower thing, I've added a bunch more information in an edit note on With Ducks In Her Hair.

The first time I saw one of these, I had to go up and touch it. They're very strange trees, but they make for GREAT fotos, and you got that for sure!!

I've never seen (nor heard of) a monkey puzzle tree, how cool it looks. Excellently chosen POV too. : )

WOW...now THAT is a tree I'd want growing in my yard...of course my yard would probably be full of worms and fungi and that would be the only green plant, but that's just me. I love the texture of this, the "weirdness" of it. I don't see stuff like this every day, and I kinda wish I did. Fantastic work, wonderful texture and pattern...there's a plant that lives in some place like Iceland, and I wonder if it's related.

We have an avenue of these Chile pines in the cemetery, and I find them most depressing to look at as a group, maybe because of the association. But they do make excellent photo material as you show in this great shot! I believe Jeff has one in his garden, a bit too prickly for me!

Andrea is quite right I do have one in the garden, we bought it for our daughter Emma when she was about two, so it will be 19 years old now. It stands at close on 6 metres now but they do grow to about 60 feet in height. It was one of the first words to come out of her mouth 'monkey puzzle' it sounded totally different but we understood her. Excellent capture Tara, those spikes protect all manner of creepy crawlers, ours is covered in spider webs. Alegedly the name Monkey Puzzle came about when they were first imported into England, somebody saw one and commented 'trying to climb that would puzzle a monkey' or words to that effect. Wikipedia has a good page on it, here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Araucaria_araucana A very interesting tree, the nuts are edible, if you can get to them. Superb work. Bravo!!!!!

Wonderful POV on this one! I've never seen a big one that close up (they're always in someone's yard and therefore off limits for close exploration)...great image!
