Description

Hello All ~! I shot this Sunday around 4pm about 3 miles from my home in Placerita Canyon . People were standing around worried about losing their homes and the whole thing seemed unreal to me. I drove as close as the fire dept would allow me to try and capture this fire blazing up on the mountain. I was trying to get a good position between the trees to shoot and suddenly there was this sweet young Donkey who seemed to be curious about all the fire trucks and noise. It reminded me sadly of all the Animals caught in the fire . I believe this fire started in Sylmar, Ca where hundreds lost their homes (almost 500 gone) in Oak ridge mobile home park ( about 10 miles from my house) A good friend of my Mom's ( Dorthy )used to live there and I have been in that park to visit many times. Drove by it on Sunday (was still smoking and had to view it from the fwy as it was a crime scene ) That upscale mobile home park looked like something right out of a Steven King nightmare! You can see pictures of the loss here: http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2008/11/california_wildfires_yet_again.html The local news said the recent firestorms in southern California this week have been the most devastating since 1961~! I think they finally got it put out now just hard to breathe outside . Played with this in PSP a little today. I did get the donkey in this scene with the fiery mountains as seen here but blended two side by side captures for in a better view of the blazing fire . Not happy about the blown sky in this shot but thought the fire was an awesome scene. Only had minutes to shoot this as the FD and police were clearing the area so fire trucks could come in - !. Strange how natures fury can sometimes be terrifying & beautiful all at the same time . My heart goes out to all the people who lost their homes. I have two real sick daughters right now - will try and get caught up on comments as ASAP but thought I would share this with you today. Thanks for all your time and comments! Love to all , ((( BIG HUGS ))) ~ Kimmers ♥ :O)

A real timely job of photo journalism fo us Kimmers. Thanks very much. The link with the pictures really provided an insider's look at the devastation. It is amazing to see homes burned flat on one plot while the house next door is untounched. And yes, Mr. Donkey spruces up the whole affair :-) Bill

Excellent capture and narrative Kim, a sad time for all concerned, thanks for the information, I feel for all those that have suffered with these damn fires. Loss of property is devastating I know, but property can be rebuilt, I just hope that people live through it all. Hope the girls are better soon.

All the poor people and animals, makes me sad, especially for the animals that get caught between blazes and can not get out. I am glad you are OK and your home and family safe!!!

the photographer Salgado has been criticized for making suffering "too beautiful," but those who adore his work understand that he isn't beautifying suffering, but capturing the sweep and humanity of it, calling us to our universal condition (ie, making it ours). This is a beautiful shot, but it doesn't 'beautify' the fires, but rather calls us to see them with the world around them, and realize that their ravages are devastating as a result. The photo has many layers of wood, leaves, hills, mists, etc; but the smoke and intense oranges of the flames remind us that they could soon enough engulf everything. You've shown nature's beauty & destruction in one shot, and caught the trembling link between the two. A powerful shot. And my best to your daughters & family, btw...

Almost difficult to say that I think this is a beautiful and impressing shot - because of what's "behind the scene". To me, however, the little donkey stands for life that goes on in spite of destruction and devastation... A good shot & work!
