Description

Continuing up the Ribble valley we come to Ribblehead Viaduct. A superb example of Victorian engineering and determination it stands at some 30 metres above the valley floor and its 24 arches span some 400 metres across the valley. Built between 1870 and 1875 it carries the famous Settle to Carlisle railway.Hundreds of navvies where employed to build the railway in this bleak and inhospitable environment several of whom died as the Victorians followed their determination for the line to be built. The viaduct crosses Batty Moss where there once stood a shanty town housing over 2000 workers. Many were gangs of immigrant workers known as "Navvies" from the term navigators when they would have worked on the earlier canal construction. In the old days of steam this would have been a magnificent sight to have seen the express as it thundered over the viaduct. The train ride is indeed beautiful, regretfully the company that own it seem to be incapable of cleaning the windows and when we took the grandkids on it it was like looking out through frosted glass.

Spectacular viaduct.. does make one appreciate the effort to build such a structure in such a remote area. The Victorians were defeated by nothing.. their energy was amazing.

thinking about those who died to make the viaduct makes this view very bittersweet. i guess it's easy to be determined with other people's lives.
