Greetings to the people of Earth.
I've always wanted to say that! Now that I did, I can now get on with other things.
I'm a science fiction writer (not famous yet) born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. I've lived in the Czech Republic and Germany, and though I am currently back in Chicago, much of my heart remains in the Czech Republic. Maybe it's the beer. Or the bread. I hope to live in Moscow soon, as a big portion of my heart already resides there. I've had an interest in science fiction since an early age and will probably maintain that interest for the rest of my life. I love SF, and anything else that embraces the spirit of discovery...or anything that chafes against the arbitrary boundaries of "conformity."Â
I discovered Renderosity a couple of years back when I was browsing the internet, looking for cool images to spark my imagination during a period of writer's block. It wasn't a serious block, but I needed something to make me ask the sorts of questions that I always ask before settling down to craft a short story or novella. Since that time, I've written quite a lot and I've begun to post photographs and other visual works that I created here...partially because I love the Renderosity community in general, and partially because the images and text-snippets that I have contributed here are something of an ongoing journal. I'm incredibly lazy when it comes to journal keeping, and so posting picures of particular significance actually helps me to remember the things I want to remembe, without having to eat into my fiction writing time by writing non fiction. Well, at least that's my excuse and I am sticking with it.
I entered into the field of photography totally by accident; I'd always been interested in capturing small stories, but it wasn't until my journey to Europe that I began to consciously seek out tableaus that imply stories in progress. As a result of that, my writing is growing in unexpected directions, and I look forward to becoming more and more active here, and in other artistic/publishing fields.

I have always loved the diffuse light through glass blocks; it has a shimmery magic all its own. This is a wonderful example of that special light!

Interesting pattern...lets the light outside filter in, but in a sense keeps one trapped inside by denying a view to the outside world.

I love glass blocks, the light they give, the way they look, everything about them. This is a wonderful shot, I can just imagine you there, looking at different views, different times of the day, trying for that perfect foto!!

You have certainly lived in some interesting places, which is good inspiration for the writer in you. Neat photo. CC

Well, no matter how much time you spent in the stairwell with the camera, the time was certainly well spent. This is an amazing shot, my friend. I love the light and the starkness of the railing. Beautiful work!

You really have an eye for these images. Framed as you look -already cropped in your head. Altogether excellent, Chip.

I understand you perfectly! I have great memories from Germany as well as you do! The difference is that I was just a tourist... Excellent shot, good composition!

C'est étrange, lorsque je suis "entré" dans cette photographie, j'ai comme senti la présence de quelqu'un derrière moi

Simple and sweet, Chip; those blocks were popular in West Texas, too, when I was a kid (when Arthur was King....)!!

I like the dark banister with the diffuse sunlight glinting off of it. A heavy dark scene that is still warm and welcoming.

I too think that bannister is the touch that finishes the picture so beautifully. You do see things with an artists eye and soul.

it's funny because it almost looks like a cathedral because of the diffuse bright light shining through glass, and those bluish reflections (which give an appearance of stained-glass); your angle and the shadow really does make it feel like a hallowed place; and given that this was a place you lived & shared for a while, you've left a kind of holy image with us (with the mystery of a place deeply remembered). And I agree with Nikolay that the light on the railing makes the shot, because it's a piece of painterly motion, a river in the darkness...Also, your words are simple & to the point, and evoke the feeling of looking back at the fragments of a life spent in a place that was once special. So a simple reflection, a looming visual, the two speak to each other and once again you've done a wonderful job of letting word & image create a single world. In catching up, I'm always struck at how seamlessly & organically you do this. You're really a master of this art, Chip.

really like the way the light passes though the glass blocks... fascinating with the handrail and the few glas blocks with a different texture
