Description

This is a glass ball made from Mount Saint Helens ash. When Mount Saint Helens blew on May 18, 1980, there was a LOT of ash around here. Some of the ash ended up in the hands of glass makers, and the local market was flooded with jewelry and figurines and hundreds of glass items made from Mount Saint Helens ash. You can see some examples here if you're interested.

I used some of that ash when I did ceramics up at Bremerton, while my ship was in drydock. It was interesting to see the effects when used in a glaze. Great image and thanks for the wonderful reminder

It may be low light, but you used it to its fullest; the textures and depth make this shot really compelling. I love the tactile nature of this. It is mellow and beautiful.

Really beautiful! Some potters attach a great deal of significance to certain wood ashes: one of my fellow potters was eccentric enough to burn his apple tree at a certain phase of the moon etc., but I have to say that I couldn't tell the difference between his apple ash glaze and mine!

What a neat shot of a most unusual object. I think I've got a figurine around here somewhere made of Mt. St. Helen ash...but I've never seen these ornaments before. Thanks for the link. Bill

There always seems to be a money making scheme behind every disaster, this one I find quite appealing myself, wonderful idea to bring much needed money back to the community that needs it. A beautiful glass ball and a fantastic capture. Bravo!!!!!
