Description

This is the south spit** of Humboldt Bay. It's where I went Christmas Day looking for those elusive monster waves that I keep missing. This gives you an idea of how high the bluffs are; see that car just to the left of the road? That road goes for about 2 miles and ends at the very treacherous bar of the bay. Just this morning in the paper, there was an article about a kayaker who was rescued after he capsized. The only reason he survived is because the Coast Guard maintains a station right across from the bar and someone saw him go in. They said he was "completely unprepared" for the kind of weather and water he was in. At any rate, when those waves DO hit, they wash over the whole road, and one of these days I WILL get that shot!! **south spit

A maginificent landscape, so pleased the kayaker survived, maybe he will have second thoughts next time he fancies an adrenalin rush. Poor man.

Try as one might, and considering the incoming offshore wind, it would take a superhuman effort to spit the length of this spit. Wonderful POV, perspective and fantasylike mood in this capture, M.

Looks like you've found the perfect spot to stand in order to photograph those elusive waves! I'll look forward to seeing them.

first, it's a very spacious shot, and captures the desolation of the area strongly. It really does feel like the "end of the world". (Nice that you got a car in there for scale...) Second, the colors are amazing: This could be a painting; wonderful deep reds. Third, you gave us a view of the Abyss at the end—thank you: It's amazingly desolate out there. Also, you gave us some grass beneath your feet so we could sense the height of the bluff. I grew up around Lake Michigan's bluffs & thought I knew bluffs: But these are really high. And fourth, I just looked-up Arcata on the web (saw your link), and it's really north. If this is near where you live, it must be stark & beautiful. (The desolation is striking...) Thanks for this shot, it's an exciting view of landscapes we don't often see, and I can see how people who live there would never want to leave...
