Description

This is another shot of that wonderful orchid** from my greenhouse. I have two, but this one is the most colorful. It has a little story with it, as well. I bought it for a co worker who was retiring, made a special trip on my lunch hour to the nursery to buy it. I put it in the back seat of my car, and of course that was the day it got HOT (for here at least, about 90). When I went to leave, the poor things looked quite dead. The blooms had all turned brown and dropped off, the leaves were wilted and droopy and all I could think was, "well, there went $40!!" So I made another trip to the nursery, bought one more and put this poor little thing in my greenhouse. It took about a year, but it came back and now rewards me with these gorgeous blooms!! **skylights btw, I'm so honored--"skylights" was chosen for LWITG--check out all the other amazing fotos that are also there--awesome stuff for sure!! Outstanding image. That is something about the plant coming back after all of that. With my luck, it doesn't work out so well as that! Another thing that kills my expensive plants off the most is following the care instructions that come with it. It is almost always wrong! So I have gotten into the habit of looking up care instructions online to see if any differ, and usually it does.

on the wall, who is the fairest one of all? 90 degrees where you are? Incredible. Outstanding POV used to capture the intrepid plant, along with the stellar colors, lighting effects and reflectivity, M! The big red thingie (a vase?) looks like either a toy balloon or a centipede, sans feet.

I remember the skylights shot, and I'm glad it got lwitg because it was both classical & beautiful. This is photo is another side to you, one of those pieces where you capture an almost abstract painter's view of your subject. It's a great angle, it's very bold, and the reflection makes it seem almost surreal. You've done some very creative work with vases, and here—with the reflection—it looks like a big ceramic insect! Strong red harmonies too. It looks like a collage from the 50s & 60s by the New York moderns—i.e., it's as much about color, form & light as it is about the flowers themselves. As for the orchid coming back to life, I'm told that orchids occupy a universe of their own (there was that famous book about orchids a while back, by someone named "Orleans," right?) so it doesn't surprise me they had a resurrection. A very creative shot, Marilyn, and a definite fav.
