Description

I decided to brake out of my backyard rut and take my photography on the road. I wound up at the Boggy Depot State Park. This time of the year very few people are there in fact I was the only one in the park this evening. So the wild life should be abundant with the absence of humans, right……..not. It was very peaceful but didn’t net much in the way of photography. Should have stayed home lots of action right out side my door but that’s the way it goes some times. Anyway this shot is from a couple of days ago. These guys are pretty cool birds, unlike their Woodpecker Brethren their favorite food is ants they’ll hammer on trees like other woodpeckers but they prefer ants and they dig in the ground to find them. They grow to 11 or 12 inches and the difference between the males and females are the males black sometimes red mustache stripe. According to All About Birds the females can have a brown mustache but the ones around here are mustache less at least the ones I’ve seen. Thanks very much for stopping by and for your comments. Have a great week end.

I like the large view...he's looking at me eye to eye:-) I'll bet they like your side door because there's a steady supply of feed there. Nice job on your notes here...I am learning. Bill

These birds only seem to pass through here , staying very briefly during late summer. Great angle for a good look at this birds colors. Well done.

Very cool, I've only seen one of these two times, and my captures were dismal. Lucky shot!

Great shot, I had a golden flicker on my pyracantha a few weeks back, but wasn't able to get a decent shot before he flew away.
