Description

Here we go. I spend a couple of hours cleaning up things that annoyed me about the original image -- the color scheme of the habitable areas got tweaked -- and I added some details in the avionics section and in the attic. Then I added all the labels. Now, there's two ways to do this: One is to put numbers everywhere and then a legend at the bottom. The other way is to put the pointers and text around the drawing. I chose the latter. Last year, work paid for me to go to Edward Tufte's seminar for a day and get his nice books. Two things I learned that day (other than that PowerPoint sucks for conveying information -- I unconsciously knew that, but now I know it for sure) were that there's no such thing as too much detail and whatever you do, don't force the viewer's eyes away from the drawing. The first, well, I covered that to the best of my ability. The second -- numbers and legends pull you out and make you hunt through a table and then back and forth again, so I think this method keeps you engaged more. It works for me, anyway. Again, the picture is the story. I'm gratified by all the views, comments and favorites on the unannotated version; hope you like this one too.

Great work...the annotated version certainly clears up some areas of the design....I definitely like this way better than a list off to the side or bottom!

The detail work you put into your creations is just staggering. I've seen my share of technical schematics, and this is really excellent work!

Amazing detail indeed, all very well planned. "Crew shell rotates with floor [...]". Wow, you even thought about this. :-) Now, when will someone build the real thing?! :-)

What a sweet image! I know from personal experience how much work and thought is demanded of this type of project. As you noted, working from the inside out often changes our initial concept of the outside of the ship. The level of effort is tremendous, but the results are spectacular. Your rotating crew sphere is a great low-tech solution to a physics problem most of us don't address in our designs. Congratulation on a job well done!
