Description

Alston Station Still cloudy and miserable so spent a bit of time on this. It's a bit HDR and some post work. Some Info At a height of 875 feet above sea level Alston in Cumbria is Northern England’s Highest Narrow Gauge Railway. The Alston to Haltwhistle branch line was opened by the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway Company in 1852 and closed closed by British Rail in 1976. A Presevertion Society was set up in 1973 but being unabkle to save the original standard gauge line, succeeded in opening a narrow gauge line along part of the old track bed in 1983. Two hundred years ago, Alston was the commercial centre of an important lead mining area, producing about 10,000 tonnes of lead per year and whilst the line no longer carries freight it does have a very pleasant passenger service which runs for 2 1/4 miles through some very picturesque scenery. Some people stop and picnic at the various stations enroute and some travel the route to start walks in the area.

Thank Heavens for preservation societies. Without them, so much of the rail heritage of England would have been lost. Excellent photo and postwork of one of my favourite parts of the country. :-)

Wonderful moody shot. I love the old station building with its tall chimneys and all the weathered brick/stone. Great work!

it would look picturesque if the clouds weren't so ominous. i think the combination is really wonderful, sort of sweet and provincial with an off-kilter undertone.
