Description

A version of this shot in portrait format. Taken at sunrise looking out over the North Sea in Anstruther, Fife. I handled the processing/colours a different way for this edit and think I prefer it.. thoughts? Enjoy your evening! Adam P.S. for those interested this is a result of the 'exposure blending' feature in Photomatix 3... I tried twice to edit the shot as hdr, combining the exposures and tonemapping, before realising blending was definitely the way to go for this... the colours are truer, the exposure more even, there are no halos, less noise is generated and the exposure is more even across the scene. For those looking for a natural alternative to hdr or grads, dare I say this could be the answer? It's certainly a blessing for shooting into the sun at any rate ;)

Great capture with a sun just coming out from behind a cloud band. This capture works a bit better for me visualy. You got more texture out of the rock and a bit stronger in tones compaire to the other capture what equaly fine but with a smoother colors on a stones. I find more ballance between a blue sky and the orange rocks here.

Adam, i totally agree that sometimes exposure blending works better than tone mapping, espcially for not adding colour casts, which are hard to correct with tone mapped images. I think the Photomatix exposure blender is capable of some fantastic results when you fiddle around with it. The colours here are truer and the lighting has that softer look that i find you lose with tone mapping sometimes. No real crits spring to mind apart from the full size view is a bit small compared to the preview, so you don't gain the extra detail when full size viewing.

Since I opted for topaz, I can only say that the effect you have achieved is beautifully done, Adam... the light, contrasts and colors are superb!

With shots like this, I would suggest you start talking to the calender publishers these are good enough for next year calenders. Hey why not try and make a bit of money from these photos. The worst that can happen is they say no.

Yup, I did one exposure blend the other day that I have in my pending post folder, it is deffinately a much more realistic result, I like this in the protrait format Adam, I think it works well with the forground texture being the main focus of the overall scene, and I absolutely agree with David, you are sitting on a gold mine here mate, I can see the rule of thirds at work here too nice!

Awesome work Adam! I heard Photomatix is better at HDR than CS4 but I have only tried a two shot HDR with Photomatix Basic and the results were good. Fantastic image!

What a Phenomenal Photo....! ! ! It's extremely breathtaking ! ! ! The clarity is as astounding, as is the robust coloration. This is one of those photos that everyone absolutely aspires to capture.

Yes, this makes some of the almost garish HDR and simulated ones look so unreal and overly sharpened on edges. Your work here shows how nice it can look and not go over the edge. Well done. As for the actual scene, this is an excellent pov, seeming to go over a rock or break of some kind then again and again way out into the deep view. Very beautiful and inticing.

Very nice! I for one would like to see the original shot blended rather than HDR but the vertical format certainly works too. Awesome work!

I have experimented with tonemapping but never tried the exposure-blending, thanks for giving a fine example of what can be achieved. I also apreciate the knowledge you are happily giving up for others less experienced like myself, I've been on other sites where no-one wants to give away their secrets lol.

SUPERB PHOTOGRAPH!!! if i want a dramatic photo that looks 'photographic' the whole tonemapping/hdri trail is so violent that i find it is only successful with rather bland images... or a way to produce 'non photographic' looking images. another thing that i do sometimes (particularly with a well defined sky) is to hand blend two exposures (one for the ground plane and another for the sky) this also works well for me. hdri and tonemapping is very easy to overdo.

This is, as Andrea say above, perfection. I do prefer this cropping to that of your first photo. And now you have peaked my interest in photo blending...I have the capability in CS4, I've just not looked into this option yet. Always something new and that's good!
