Description

Anna and I wandered thru the grounds of a hotel on Monterey Bay. As we walked, trying to find the way out, I looked down and saw a garden full of these wonderful spiky red flowers. They're a succulent of some kind and were about 6 feet high--pretty impressive!!

Aloe succotrina is what you found. The bloom is not a typical agave although there is a species of agave that resembles the leaf of this plant here. But, it looked more like one of the many varieties of aloe vera and sure enough, when I googled red aloe vera blooms, I got it right off the bat. :-) Great find and capture.

That's real purty, ma'am. Sterling clarity and colors in this shot, M! I've seen the same succulents down here in Southern Calif but they were mostly green in color, although I may have shots of the red variety lingering somewhere in my files.

I'm so glad PJ knew what it was, because it's a fascinating bloom, and I had no idea! What a wonderful find.

boom! another of your teeming captures with so much stuff happening, and it's all so vivid & jumping. I love the play of the plant against the fence walls, and the partitions in the background, and the play of the red against the green, etc. A real mix of vibrancy & textures. I love this. Can I say this is a "Marilyn" shot? Well, it's one kind, because you have a lot. But you do get these 'confluence' shots, and they're just a convention. Love it!

Great colours. Thanks for the botany lesson PJ. Wish the climate would support just a few of the wonderful "jolie laide" plants you discover for us. Theyalways amaze and astound.
