Description

This building in downtown Seattle (5th & Pike) was originally the Coliseum Theater. It opened in 1915 in the days of silent movies, and featured a Wurlitzer organ. You can read more about the building and its history (and see a whole bunch of wonderful photographs!) here if you're interested. It's now a clothing store. Ah well ...

Oh, purrrrfect subject for a B&W photo. You are takeing us back to 1915-1920. I am forwarding the link to a friend of mine here who is an organ nut. Once a year he goes north from Kansas somewhere to the home of some old multi-millionaire with several buildings full of grandly restored organs from all over the country. Can you imagine the experience of seeing a movie in this place at the height of its' popularity? I wonder what used to happen in the "intimate mezzanine"? Words in the news clipping, not mine :-)))

Superb details, Tara! At least they haven't pulled it down, we've had a great deal of architectural vandalism in this country before listing was intoruced to offer a degree of protection.

I'm with Andrea, at least they didn't pull it down and put up a modern building; that's a big part of Seattle's charm. Beautiful shot of a majestic old lady!

Those blueish and brown sepia tones are so effective in this photo! It helps a lot to the "historical" feeling. Beautiful!

You're lucky it is still there and not demolished for new complexes, like so many of our wonderful old buildings. Regardless of what is inside, we can still appreciate its magnificence through photos like yours! :)
