Description

When I was on Lopez Island last weekend, I saw this face. I promise ... it was really there! I didn't paint or postwork this image, except to do a very slight color pop to separate the face from the surrounding greenery. On the way back up to the truck, I showed it to my friends, and they asked if I would write a poem about it. So here you have it ... .......... The Watcher in the Woods While walking in the woods The other day I came upon a face I stopped, we stared I gazed upon him there Delighted, charmed With him all mossy And implacable The things he must have seen As seasons change Young lovers strolling In the springtime rain The creatures of the woods About their lives With darkness as his rest When all are gone My camera out I snapped and clicked and shot While thinking of my friends Who want to see This face this silent Watcher in the woods This Lopez Island Denizen of peace

The moss man watches all that passes. Well spotted and splendid capture. The ferns just make him an Indian watcher. Dana P

I stare at the face (a right profile I see), I read the poem, I stare. I read, again and again. The face is cool. The word I can't take my eyes off is "implacable". I've been reading too much World War II history of late. A quote comes to mind. "In friendship false, implacable in hate: Resolved to ruin or to rule the state." John Dryden authored the quote...but thanks to my reading, Adolf Hitler comes to mind. Now, that's how I understand, "implacable". What's that got to do with your face? It'll be there the next time you go to Lopez Island...don't go alone. Spooky... :)

I keep looking at him and can't decided if I want to hug him or run away--he has that kind of strange appeal. I love your poem!!

I know how natural forms can have faces, they can have all kinds of wonderful expressions, there's no doubt this is a natural capture. And I like the clarity of the shot, and especially the contrast of his deep greens and that glowing white behind. It's almost like you shot it in a special space, it glows. As for the poem, a mythic feeling, seeing a face that's always there as life passes around it, and people want to come to it as if it has special powers in its gaze and presence. Very nice, and the poem feels peaceful underneath. And: 10 syllable couplets! Yes! Many couplets go from more beats to less, and the shorter line caps off the thought & rhythm. Nicely done—a weave of mood, feeling & rhythm, seamless integration. You just did a multimedia collaboration, only with yourself. Fine work!

I'm awful at finding faces and shapes in things but I'm one of the best at seeing something that takes my breath away. This is one of those. The richness and composition here is simply stellar.

A beautiful composition. The face looks more like a pig's face to me, or a wild boar, even. Maybe that is just me. ;o) Love the poem that tells the story.
