Description

These 3 were painted yesterday afternoon/evening , about 3-4 hours spent, they were painted using only turpentine as a medium, keeping the paint as thin as possible and trying to keep the edges soft, so that they don't look as if they were pasted into the scene. They were a little difficult to paint wet into wet at this size, as there heads are'nt much bigger than my thumb, however this helps to keep them slightly out of focus, which is the desired effect, can allways sharpen some details later. As the spear is repeated in this scene, I thought it would help to repeat the shield as well. I allso wanted to repeat the armor of the lead actor, onto the soldier who is facing us, I think these 3 repeating ellements will help pull the foreground and the middleground together, and help to add impact to the soldier who's recounting the events on the hill, to his commander. By the way I'm no expert nor great artist, I'm more of a story teller. The experts would tell you to work the whole painting as a whole, and traditionally speaking they are right, i get bored to easy, when I take this aproach and often don't finish, so this is how I aproach my work and it works for me ...... But not good art theory!!!!! Anyway thanks for watching and your gracious comments !!! as most of you know the creation of art is a lonely proccess .... wish I could sing!!!! tom (pallette)... yellow ochre , cadium yellow light, grumbacher red, raw umber, burnt sienna, mars black and titanium white

The added color really brought this more focus. Coming together nicely! Oh, & don't worry. I can't sing, either. ;)

Its enjoyable seeing this develop and in particular reading your comments as to why you made certain decisions. I was curious as to the repetition of items and I find the explanation enlightening. Looking forward to the next.

So nice, and very interesting!! Every day I have followed the progress of this work in your gallery and I am amazed about the expressivity and the feeling inside. I love all the symbolism and the structure of this Golgotha. The crosses over the rock make a like of sense of abyss, and remembers me the ancient words of the prophet in Bible ... "tehom el tehom"... ("An Abyss call another abyss with the voice of your waterfalls") that I personally interpretate - The abyss of love from God, is calling the abyss of men weakness, with the voice of the waterfalls of blood and grace (but is a very personal interpretation). Thanks again, I will follow every day until you will fine this amazing masterwork. 100000 stars

but the experts created a realm on their own, if you ask me! the limits and definitions they work with are our traps, thats what i think. i am not anymore a member of anything here in germany, not the bbk (wich is such a club of experts) nor in business anywhere, luckily in the situation to do whatever i want to do. i am not interested what experts might have to say, as they love to quote old standards and that is quite something with a long long beard. to me, each free comment and critique means more. i think you did a very fine job so far, i like it a lot :)

Tom, you succeeded very well in making the making the soldiers appear part of the scene. Your golds and folds get my attention. They are wonderful. It is great to know you don't follow a prescribed way of painting. I think that is something every artist has to learn, to find what is right for them, especially so they can finish a painting. :) You are a wonderful storyteller in your art, and I think that is a gift in itself.

We need more story tellers and I like the way you do this in your paintings and in your accompanying notes. You are making this all very enjoyable. This is my daily art class:) And the best part is there isn't a test at the end. Is there?

Well i for one think you are a master in your won way, in art it is everyone for themselves. I try to tell people that if you are learning from someone it is just like doing a copy of their work, when it is done and the painting ends up as if it were painted by the person that did the teaching. never change what you do and the way you do it, and i hope you will have success in the future. keep up the amazing work I must send my brother a link to your work he is a critic and also buys stuff.

Art is the expression of one's own feelings, do what YOU must do to create what you will. Your hand will be guided to do the right thing

"to keep the edges soft, so that they don't look as if they were pasted into the scene" I didn't knew there was a problem with this in "real life" :), I just recently learned to do this in Photoshop.. "I'm more of a story teller" I doesn’t matter if you are expert in colours or know all about perspective if you don't have anything to say, artist's statement is what it is called.. I am sure that the painting will turn out great but even if it shouldn’t be so to have seen the whole process, having been invited backstage so to speak has been enormous interesting.

Who say's you cant sing? There are many different ways to sing.... Birds "sing" but are they really singing or just expressing a love of being alive and communicating with each other......The way you communicate with me is very touching even though I know you speak not to me here in the most direct sense.....I'm a firm believer like others here of "learn the rules..... then forget them" You do that in your work and that is how you take your art imho to the next level.... You are so helpful and informative and entertaining and generous with your time.....Always a favorite part of my visits here.....Keep up the great work!!!! All the best!!!!! Rob
