In every self-respecting border town there is a number of fences. Then they discovered that they could get some extra bobs by accepting bets against J.S. playing darts. In it's own way, Peter's Den was as exclusive as the GPS. All males in the area would drop in at it to drink a Martian beer not bad if one didn't wish to penetrate the veil of vagueness concerning its origin. In this male sanctuary they chatted about sports teams, engines, females of every race, and the latest political gossip. After the poor figure cut recently, J.S. was more than happy to have a female-free hangout. Actually, after that day Eve had popped up in his mind more often than he liked and he was worried, also because he saw that she usually kept him at an arm's distance. At last, in the confy all-male environment, he fished for a hint from Adam. "Do you know by chance why Eve has it in for me? She doesn't even touch me!" Adam took the bait: "She has taken no offence. On the contrary she likes you more than a bit. The fact is that Eve is telepathic, so she avoids touching you..." "What!" a stunned J.S. interrupted. "She reads my mind!" "Yes and no. Actually she did only once. You were half dead and we had to decide what to do. But it was a superficial reading, just enough to decide we wished to help you." J.S. couldn't help thinking that it was the first time that someone, knowing who he was and what he had done, decided to save his skin instead of piercing a terminal hole into it. "And now, she's doing it again?" "No because we respected you. You respected us when you told us about you and your job here without prompting. We already knew, but you didn't lie." J.S. thought that for the first time in his life the truth, however massaged, had been more useful of a true lie. "Eve is hard with herself and respectful. I can see from this that she likes you" Adam went on. Peter added: "You are among friends here, you're almost one of us." J.S. was opening his mouth to reply when Flotsam rushed in.
