Greetings to the people of Earth.
I've always wanted to say that! Now that I did, I can now get on with other things.
I'm a science fiction writer (not famous yet) born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. I've lived in the Czech Republic and Germany, and though I am currently back in Chicago, much of my heart remains in the Czech Republic. Maybe it's the beer. Or the bread. I hope to live in Moscow soon, as a big portion of my heart already resides there. I've had an interest in science fiction since an early age and will probably maintain that interest for the rest of my life. I love SF, and anything else that embraces the spirit of discovery...or anything that chafes against the arbitrary boundaries of "conformity."Â
I discovered Renderosity a couple of years back when I was browsing the internet, looking for cool images to spark my imagination during a period of writer's block. It wasn't a serious block, but I needed something to make me ask the sorts of questions that I always ask before settling down to craft a short story or novella. Since that time, I've written quite a lot and I've begun to post photographs and other visual works that I created here...partially because I love the Renderosity community in general, and partially because the images and text-snippets that I have contributed here are something of an ongoing journal. I'm incredibly lazy when it comes to journal keeping, and so posting picures of particular significance actually helps me to remember the things I want to remembe, without having to eat into my fiction writing time by writing non fiction. Well, at least that's my excuse and I am sticking with it.
I entered into the field of photography totally by accident; I'd always been interested in capturing small stories, but it wasn't until my journey to Europe that I began to consciously seek out tableaus that imply stories in progress. As a result of that, my writing is growing in unexpected directions, and I look forward to becoming more and more active here, and in other artistic/publishing fields.

Wonderful evening shot with man made light of incandescent, fluorescent, sodium and other rarefied gases contrasting with the natural sky colours of sunset in the background. A terrific feel of energy especially with the river aways in motion just under foot.

The shimmering night lights playing their music on the water. The sky not yet willing to give up it's light to the darkness of night. Fantastic shot, Chip.

Gorgeous colors - rich and beautiful. I love it when you walk around aimlessly, looking for things to shoot. There's always something, and you have a knack for finding just the right thing.

Veeeerrrryyyyy nice! You nailed this one! The perfect spot on the bridge! The depth of field is just right! The water, the lighting...I really LOVE the whispy bit of sunset cloud hovering on the horizon. Lovely.

Romantic sight. Why are night lights always thought of as romantic? But this is and the reflections accent that mood.

Fantastic work.

Your pic shows that a city can be very beautiful, even though I find them soul-withering.

Just the last hint of light sneaking off and leaving the mirrors of its soul. Excellent capture.

Your night time cityscapes are well thought out and beautifully lit and I enjoy your eloquent statements on each of your images. Thanks so much for the kind comment you left on my latest effort.

Chicago looks way different at night then in the day, This is beautiful work. I spent my teen years in Kenosha Wisconsin, we took a lot of day trips to Chicago. I have only seen Chicago in the day time.

yes you captured chicago at dusk, at least the downtown area. Night does exhale off the lake, doesn't it (as always, well put Chip), it kind of brushes over the city as if by a painter. And you got the in-between moment when day still whispers and night is pressing it out of existence. The pale light, the luminous dark blues, the shimmer of the street-level lights (which you capture well in other shots too—I'm thinking of your incredible halsted shot which began this group of chicago uploads, I think), and the dark hidden quality of the rest—that's what it's like. A beautiful mysterious shot, filled with the contradictions of the modern American city, the shimmer & coldness, and that old state st. bridge speaking of an older iron age in the city's history which was filled with as much corruption as today's, only more localized; and the river looking deep & mysterious even though it was so polluted for so long & carried the bodies of god-knows how many unwanteds...fine work again. You've done this city a great visual service...
