Description

Oil on canvas 30x40 inches Well there's not much to say about this step, it's a pretty loose painting at this point... color thinned with turpentine only ... And I do mean thinned , it's painted as a watercolor ... as I did'nt tone the canvas at all , it's pure white, and I'm letting the white show through in varying degrees to help establish the tonal qualitys .... as I'm looking for this painting as I paint it !! And i am alittle lost with it at this point!!! Years ago I painted portraits and nudes ... and allways had a reference this type of imaginative painting is much tougher to see to the end!!! Vintorix .... I have no idea what noobasurUS meant by his last comment ... I musta read it 6 or 7 times .... and I'm still lost !!! I know this tho he's a good egg ... His name is Rob and I do like him!!!! tom

My chair is pulled up and I am sitting on the edge looking to see what comes next.

I really like this "watercolor" technique on this one. It gives it a transcendent atmosphere. That doesn't disturb the compassion extended to the centurion, but highlights how special this moment is.

Beautiful work Tom!!! and thank you for the kind words. The painting is progressing quite nicely and I think it's gonna be really spectacular when you finish it....My comment was meant only as food for thought and to entertain....not to offend or mystify... As always I am very appreciative of your talent and the generosity you have shown with sharing your inner and technical artistic process. I wish you all the best and can't wait for the next post!!! Everyone have a great day!! Rob

Another in-between step I as a non-painter don't think about... It appears that there is a lot of build-up enroute to your final finish. The closest I can come is the process of writing a poem...I know what the end result is probably going to look like but the words chosen and how they are arranged and rearranged is extremely important in capturing the emotions of the characters and in transmiting the full impact of the story.

Sorry NoobasaurUS I apolygize! I am always willing to defend artists drawing inspiration from whatever they find it. I am not a believer in anything I am a secular person but I love myths and sagas, nature and women and the Bible is one of the greatest piece of art ever created. I fact I stole a Bible when I was a little boy in school! We didn't have any at home. The teacher couldn't understand how anyone could do such a thing, to him it meant a contradiction.. :)) Anyway Tom surprises us again with this oil as watercolour trick, it that allowed? Hmm, I forgot that everything is allowed...no police are going to show up at his door saying, oil as watercolor? come with us..

so nice progress here, its so fun to see how everything comes alive, slowly, step by step. and imaginative images like this one are the bigger challenge, i think ... and can certainly leave one a bit lost from time to time. yet it all looks so great already, love it!

Wow. Call me crazy, but I think you could even stop here and still have a great image. Highly stylized, but still cool. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Do you ever mix watercolors with an overlay of oils? A soft watercolor like background would be awesome with a strong foreground! Just my little old thoughts. I love the work so far .. and most of all I love watching the progression of a worl in progress!
