Description

By my Field Guide to the Birds of North America, I think we have an Indigo Bunting here. But maybe not...the black mask on the eyes throws me. As I look at my guide, this may be a Blue Bunting...anybody know for sure? Blue Buntings don't usually come as far north as Kansas. Focus on the bird doesn't allow me to blow this up any larger at this time. However a ZOOM helps. I have combined two pictures taken a split second apart of the same bird. He went from standing on the edge of the bowl to straight and level flight exactly as you see it here. Neat trick for this little guy. Thanks for stopping by. I'm hoping to capture him again in fine focus in order to show him larger and closer. Bill:)

You did a spectacular job combining the two photos, and the result is wonderful! Keep shooting this little guy ... the colors are gorgeous, and I'd love to see one closer up. We don't have anything like this here. For some reason our birds are all rather drab. Red-brested robins and male ducks are about as colorful as it gets in these parts!

Hi! O.K. I've checked on three different sites. It seems to be The indigo Bunting. So you were right in the first case. Another great action capture. I've a 300mm Tele lens So if that doesn't capture the little bugger!! Take care, Rob.

Yes, I was wondering about that bird doppelganger behind the main little guy. Pretty good photo manipulation. Nice effects, though a bit dark for my tastes, but a cool capture overall, Bill.

Well if you read a few books, I stopped at three, I concur with your conundrum of identification. It seems most likely to be the common indigo however....the solid color black bill deems it probable as the blue bunting of the deep south. I read these birds often travel with the indigo's. Also the blue are listed as vagrant. I would not doubt that it wandered. I think it is a once in a lifetime visitor to your area. I used my Peterson field guide Birds of N.A. and the National Wildlife Federation as cross reference here. I tossed out the third book as it had little information at all that was helpful. Look for this bird more in the next few days as it may be with indigo's and since it has found your feed it will likely return unless the weather falls cooler.
