Description

Zoom to see the female better. Hi it's me again. I have another Peafowl shot for you and some wonderful information to go with it. These are Indian Peafowl Peafowl is what you call both the male and female. Peacock - male and peahen - female (Pavo cristatus) Members of the Pheasant family Peafowl are wild, but can be domesticated. They stress out very easily and should be given lots of room. This is why at most zoos they are allowed to roam freely. I also don't think they like to get interrupted either. He is just giving me that look. Peafowl are ground feeders and eat insects and plants. They are also said to eat cat or dog food, but that is not recommended. They are attracted to the color white, that's serious, and will chase you down for that sandwich. Personal experience at the Milwaukee County Zoo, while on a field trip with my daughter a long time ago. I can out run a peacock. Their train or tail feathers can reach up to 60 inches or 5 feet long. Hey 2 1/2 more inches and that tail is as long as I am tall, whoa! Peafowl are one of the largest flying birds when combined length of the train and wing span Their life span is 20 years. Thank you for peeking at my post, I hope you found it enjoyable as well as educational. Thank you for all the totally awesome comments left on my previous post, I love them they mean the world to me. You are all an awesome group of people. You friend always and forever, Cheri

This is an excellent shot. It looks like a peacock yet you say it is something else. I wonderif they make the same noise as a peacock. This is very interesting Cheri.

I wonder how many knew what the female is called? Everyone knows the peacock, but probably weren't aware that name only refers to the male. I learned the answer to the female while playing the original Trivial Pursuit. My answer was wrong, and won't type what I said here. Trying to get one with it's tail fanned out is difficult, but hey!! It's mating season in Wisconsin right now, so maybe we'll get lucky!......with the picture I mean.

Well, that settles it. No more munching on a white bread tuna sandwich while dressed in a white T-shirt and pants when in the general presence of these birds. With my bad back and arthritic knees, I could never outrun them. Stellar profile portrait of what I usually call a peacock, Cheri. Love the massive variety of colors and feather display of these magnificent avians.

Nice capture, Cheri. One of our local factories, in Bridgeton, Glasgow, Scotland has had 'guard geese' since before the second world war, more to deter local criminals than to provide the occasional meal. Over thirty years ago, The Scottish Police College had 'guard peacocks'. The food was so consistently bad in the college that recruits tried, in the evenings, to sneak out to buy some real food at the local village. Getting back into the grounds, and to one's dormitory was difficult. Not counting the slippery walls, crunchy gravel and other such man made obstacles, it was quite tricky because one had to avoid setting off a peacock. Mind you, looking back on it, it was good training for sneaking quietly around properties when one got back on one's beat, when attempting to capture the real thieves ... ;o) Warm regards, John.
