Description

We went on an adventure yesterday. It was great, I really needed that. I brought my camera along, as usual. We went to a flea market in Princeton, Wisconsin, It was huge. Then Dave said "Hey, We are ten minutes from Montello." Knowing very well I had my camera with me. By the way I took almost two hundred pictures yesterday and almost all of them are post worthy. We even wandered on to an exclusive resort in Green Lake. Back to the cute little turtle. The turtle was in Montello we were exploring the downtown area checking out all the shops and looking for the art fair they advertised. We never found the art fair although it was supposed to be right where we were. This little guy was crossing Main st. Dave ran out into the busy road and got the cars to avoid the turtle. He picked him/her up and took him to the river to place him/her on a rock. He/she made a bee line right to the river and jumped in. Dave is a turtle hero. Before releasing the turtle I wanted to get a shot. It was very curious about the camera and it took three shots to get a good one.In the first one he/she decided to check out the strap and moved his/her head right out of the shot. The second one is this one and he/she is looking right into the lens, and the third one he/she decided to sniff the lens. The third one turn out blurry, but as always after I take a picture of an animal, I thanked him/her for the picture, and Dave released him/her to be free and live. Dave we dubbed thee the ultimate knight of the turtle defense. I love you honey, do not ever change your compassion for all living things. It's on the top of the reasons why I love you list. Thank you for coming in and taking a look. Thank you for all the wonderful comments on my previous posts. You have all become like family. I love and cherish all the comments. Your friend always, Cheri

I get dubbed a knight for this?,...how cool is that? I don't want to give too much away because of some of the upcoming shots Cheri's going to post, but since she already explained that were were near water, I'll just go with that. All while she was busy grabbing shots, I kept looking for a turtle, hoping to find one sunning itself on a log or rock on the river. We never found one. As we were walking back to the car to leave, I spot this little one, a bit more than mid way across the road, with a truck rapidly approaching it. I ran out into the street waving my hands and pointing to the turtle, the driver swerved at the last possible moment. I picked it up and asked Cheri if she wanted her shot of a turtle that had eluded us, until then, the entire time. I was hoping for only a shot of one from a bit of a distance, and end up getting one in my hands. I don't think I was heroic, just didn't want to see it's life end up a a speed bump!!

As a former turtle rescue person (for about 10 years) my best guess is this is a male by the length of the front claws. Males have longer claws than females and longer tails. There are other ways to tell sex but you have to turn them over and look at the rear plates to tell for sure. :-) I am not versed in box turtles so I can't say if GBcalls is correct - I didn't know they liked water that much. My experience is in the common red-earred slider. Some rescues were so tragic they held humor. "Where did you find this turtle?" "At the river. I saw it and thought someone not as kind as me would come along and decide to take it home for a pet, so I "rescued" it and brought it to you..." LOL I always gave the turtle some general antibiotics, monitored it for health issues and 3 weeks later returned it to the river. Glad to hear you really did a rescue here and then turned it loose where it will have a good long life. Great shot. :-)

What a great shot! A crisp, clear, colorful photograph, and the story is great! He looks like a healthy, happy creature. I'm trying really really hard to be a good girl and not ask if Dave kissed the turtle, but it's sooooooo hard to resist!! (I won't ask. I won't. I WON'T!) :P

Fantastic shot. Bugs are more my thing, but a nice reptile always makes my day. Great sense of color and overall turtle-ness. I especially like the clarity of his markings, especially the red streaks: they're captured perfectly--red, but not eye-searing. Perfect shot with some interesting mammalian fingers as well.

this is a good clear shot of it. wonderful you turn it lose. some people i know would be eating it. i would never do that. to make mock turtle is to put same amount of chicken, pork, and beef together. taste the same and no hurt to the turtle

Now you really make me feel guilty in light of the squirrel I ran over with my auto two weeks ago, and the pigeon I clipped with my car this morning, with feathers flying every which way. I'm not sure I killed it though. Didn't see a body in my rearview mirror. Hey, I can't control the actions of these life forms. They need a crash course in the rules of the road. In any event, a stellar closeup portrait of the handsome, but languid, reptile, most fortunate to have been rescued by your Dave.
