Description

I've been taking a writing class the last few weeks. Tonight is the last class and our assignment was pretty open, though the teacher did make suggestions. Since my last piece talked a lot about my son and the great times I've had with him river rafting, etc, she suggested I write about him. I ended up with two different pieces, this poem and short story. Here's the poem: A Baby Is Born A baby is born Soft and new Sweet little guy With eyes of blue I bring him home Hold him tight Snuggle so warm It feels so right He grows so fast Into a little boy Off to school With lots of joy Every day brings Something new But sometimes It just makes him blue Life can be hard Kids can be mean His heart is hurt He’s nearly a teen I watch him change Into a young man Growing and learning By his own hand Today he’s strong And smart and fine My heart swells Because he’s mine 6/23/09

Your writing classes have certainly paid off for you I enjoyed reading your poem a lot and hope to see many more. Also very nice post-work that tells a story in itself, well done I think it's wonderful.

What a beautiful, heart-felt poem about your son. He's lucky to have you as a mother, Marilyn.

Your words just flow from birth to last week in 28 short lines. I can feel your love, your concerns, your feelin he's going to make it and the pride of his having arrived at a place in life you are both proud of. I know you'll be able to add lines to this as the future unfolds. A+++

it's been said that when poetry uses short rhythmic lines, it approaches the poetry of pure childhood and pure folklore. This is like that. It's delightful and moving, Marilyn, as simple as could be, and it touches me truly. And your 2 & 4 rhyme (second & fourth line) is also very simple & childlike, and though it's written by an adult (you) it feels like it's written to the child in all of us. Simple, direct, and touching. Beautiful tribute to your son, and beautiful photo-montage too. Delectable.
