Wacomb tablet and photoshop 5.5 Well here's where we're at thus far... A couple of notes : Firstly, I was really struggling with painting the soldiers face and could'nt see the cursor ... and then Vintorix's words popped into my head ( what a scary thing at 1:00 am ) you folks know how he is, always talking about pixel size and such ( he's to dang smart I hate him) ;) anyway I looked at the working drawing, image size and saw that it was only 700x850 pixels. After doubling the size WOW, what a dif!! I was able to paint his face much easier and could now see to clean up the trees, before this I felt like I was painting with a mop!! By the way the sword won't stay where it is now it's on it's own layer , I moved it out of the way to paint the soldier. And also changed the spear, as it was interfering with the reaching trees ( they represent his past and the woes of life). Thats the amazing thing to me about photoshop... the layers part is amazing !!! Each ellement is on it's own layer... allowing me to build the comp , as if arranging a still life (way to cool), In the past this was done with tissue overlays, a very time consuming and almost painful process. Speaking of layers, this image had about 14 layers the other nite and I was lost and confused ... and then at about 3:00 am it ocurred to me to name the individual layers (duh) So now if I want to work on the sword I click on the layer named sword, instead of the number 7 etc. What an obvious and stupid oversite!!! THANK YOU ALL for all your past comments and encouragement!!!!!! And I welcome all comments both critical and non-critical, as changes can be experimented with so much easier in this medium, unlike oils! Someone once posted a comment about combining traditional and digital medium... guess who? .... Yep you got it... (Vintorix.... Grrrrr) Tom

Wonderful work! I feel your pain about learning layers. it took me a long time to get comfortable with them and I still have issues at times, but it's getting better! Great work and I can't wait to see the final image!

This is grand...I am amazed at how very simialr this is to your traditional painting results. Thanks for the explanation regarding pixel size and layer naming.

Looks like you are doing great with the tablet, Tom. Layers are wonderful in PS. This is my biggest handicap moving from digital to traditional. Those layers aren't so easy in traditional. My max was near 70, but some go over 100 layers in digital. I also use blends and move the layers around. Naming them is something I still don't do. It is like a shell game. Dumb? Yes! But, I save alot. ;)

What that is so interesting for me is to see is the difference between a real painter and us 3D unwashed. In the 3D world we apply texture to area A, another to area B und zu weiter. The result can never match the small gradual shifts that almost unnotisable transforms Tom's colours and tonality. It is like day and night! BTW that doesn't mean we can not to try! with gradients and so on. But the technique doesn't lend itself easely to it.. Also it is nice to see an image that gives a new meaning to the expression 'viberant' :). About the Roman soldier, I am sure he has given up his practice of chopping up people and children by this time. That shows the power of abstract ideas! In all Tom do, and wherever he can be seen, you see the tail of the pro.
