Description

The juveniles are coming. The parents of this young Red-Bellied Woodpecker were here multiple times every day in May. My avatar is probably this bird's papa:) There is nothing wrong with this young woodpecker. Adults have a hard time standing on a flat surface too, owing to their extremely long tallons used for hanging onto tree bark at starnge angles. Adults typically take a three point stance on their two feet but rocked back against their tail feathers. This youngster hasn't quite got that figured out yet. It is difficult (for me) to tell if this is a male or female. When mature the male has red on the top of his head all the way down his neck to his back. The female just has gray on the top of her head with red down the back of her neck. Here the red is just beginning to come in. Therefore, this is probably a young male. He/she isn't interested in any birdseed but the suet mixture was just right. Bill:)

A cool shot. I can see it would be hard for them to stand on a flat surface. Excellent.

This is pretty cool. I am wondering what was in the feed that made it "tipsy"? Nice Capture!

How fun! He/she looks so ungainly, like a teenager not quite comfortable in their body yet. Excellent capture!

Great shot. Fun title. Glad to know this is a normal, albeit inexperienced stance. He/she is very cute.

Apparently, the youngster is beginning life as a contortionist. Looks like its sliding into second base. Stellar shot of the woodpecker as it attempts to balance itself while doing a juggling act with the birdseed/suet in its beak. And, I love the textured patterns on the feathers.

I thought that perhaps the suet made the area all slippery! I appreciate your tutorial to set me straight. The askew stance really makes for a great capture, well done!!!!

I have to laugh as it seems it is more acustomed to eating hanging vertically from a tree trunk. Eating on a horizontal surface seems to have flumuxed him a bit. :-) Fabulous shot.
