Description

Mike (mikeerson) commented on my last upload, Flying Jewel, that it was blurry. well when the bird is flying at you as you take the picture, it's gonna be just a tad blurred. However, I do have a couple of 'sharp' photos of the hummingbird. Of course, she was resting on the perch of the feeder which was only 3 feet away from me. So here it is, cropped, due to the size of the image and touched up with the contrast to bring out the details. I hope that everyone has a great weekend and thanks for the comments and faves Mike

Very cool shot! My mom has hummingbirds around the outside of her house all the time because of the types of flowers she grows in her garden. I have seen them many times drinking the nectar from the flowers. They flap their wings so fast you can hardly see them. To see one at rest is amazing to me.

At a shutter speed of 1/20th of a second, you would have to be more stable with your hands then a top surgeon, hence a little bit of blur. In my experience you need 1/125 or higher minimum (I generally try to get it around 1/200th) to get crystal clear tack sharp photos. You can cheat this a little in photoshop, by changing the mode to Lab color, then select the luminance channel and run a Unsharp mask on the luminance channel, then convert back to RGB- this effectively sharpens the image without compromising the color and getting weird artifacts.

The "humming birds" out in Orange County make a weird screech. This one looks happy enough.
