Description

First of all, this is NOT a manipulation, but a simple collage. These are the strange, deforming reflections made by the structures in glass and steel of the restructured Altinate Center in Padova. It was a convent, and we are on the 1st floor cloistered passageway. Then it became a Provinvial Justice Court, and after two decades of abandon, it was restructured and it opened last year as an Urban Centre. 2009: Flavia and me are taking a shot at our images on the opposite side of the three-storey empty space, with a glass and steel roof, and colored balls and hangings to add to the deforming mirror effects of the place. 1973: this place was still a Court of Justice. When Flavia, myself, and a handful of girls decided to transform a two-minute trial against a girl from the countryside into a political event, we put in motion a national avalanche which transformed Italian legislation on women as well as Italian society. Thanks to some girls from the University of California in Padova, we even had interviews at the CNN and Time magazine. Looking at ourselves through the empty space of the patio is like looking at ourselves from decades into the future. Much older, less naive, but not unhappy with that we did.We were backed by most mothers and some fathers at that time. What's ironic is that the same politician that was railing at us as 'witches' at that time, as a Mayor last summer funded an exhibition with photos from my archive and another old girl's one. ;D)
