Description
Hi,
Thanks for the response on this character I am making.(For the hell of it)!
As I mentioned I'd be showing some of the process for this character from scratch so here we go.
In zbrush you can make shapes from zpheres and then convert your model into a mesh for sculpting on.You basically start with a zsphere(fig 1.) and then attatch more zpheres(as many as you need)to the base zsphere (fig 2) and build your object out, like a tree for example.
Once you have a zsphere on top of another one you can pull it out which makes a length determined by how far you pull it.Like an arm being pulled out of a shoulder.(See Fig 2).
Once you have made your zphere model you can move and scale the various zspheres and sections which is good for posing and fine tuning your model base.Fig 4.
Fig 1.Zphere drawn on canvas.
Fig 2.Showing beginning construction stage.
Fig 3.Showing mutliple zpheres drawn off a base zsphere.
Fig 3b.Showing what the model looks like converted to a workable polymesh for sculpting.
Fig 4.The zphere base I made for my character.
Fig 5.What it looked like coverted to a polymesh.
Fig 6.Showing polygroups.
At this stage you will need to divide your model to get more polygons so your sculpting will work properly. There is a divide button you press and it x4's your poly count onto the mesh.
The beginning level is about 2600 polys for this model.Im now at about 6 million after my dividing alot for detail transfer to be smooth.
Fig 7.Showing some brush effects.
a)Mallett brush.
b)Ram brush.
c)Clay brush.
d)Standard brush.
e)Inflate brush.
f)Layer brush.
g)Expand brush.
h)Rake brush.
i)Cut brush.
There are many more brushes in zbrush but I normally use these ones. You can set heights, depths, scale etc on each brush.
Fig 8.Sphere decorated with various brushes and using symetery.
The fine details on the main character are done by using alphas. You basically drag out the detail over your mesh at the depth or height you want.Zbrush will wrap it straight onto your model.Skin pores and fine details etc are done this way.Its great!!
Ok,so thats it.Ive probally just confused a very simple explination as Im not very good at tutorials. If you all would like to come round(bring a bottle)I'll show you what Im doing ha ha..
Any questions ?

This is soooo awesome!!! Love hearing how you do it....I was looking at ZBrush the other day and it really is such an incredible program...seems overwhelming to me...but so was Poser.....excellent hon...look forward to more, love, Carol

You make it look so easy. Excellent model.

Man i whish i could come for a heavy ZBrush session, i even would bring two or three bottles :-). Not really fair that you're so far away :-(. This is going to be a realy cool character! Not an easy desission about the horns, i like him with and without them? So i fear i'm not a big help here, it's still up to you ;-)...
scifibabe
A very nice tutorial. Wish I had Zbrush so I could play with it and try what you've done here. It's still very interesting to see how you do what you do. You are so talented. And I like the horns addition - I think it really works for this character. Now he needs a way cool tail and wings. :) Very cool work.

Demon or Vampire this is the question, LOL for me he is a vampire with an unfaithful wife ( and this explain the hirn and his not happy character) LOL.... i'm joke i prefer it like vampire and your tutorial for Zbrush is excellent you need me learn like use this program i'm totally incapace.. All is great here Calum, smack smack Orietta P.s. Can be his wife the vampire in mine last image ???? she ask he back to home please send it to home ok... ciaoo smack
Burpee
Very cool but he needs bigger or more fingers on his hand to make them scare us. They look whimpy right now. Give us some CLAWS! Big claws!! btw, love your work.
eekdog

LOVE THE HORNS, THANKS FOR THROWING A LIGHT ON THE BASICS! AS FOR THE BOTTLE I JUST OPENED ONE IN HONOR OF YOUR GREAT HORNED DEMON! CHEERS!

Great work, and I appreciate the Zbrush insight!

That looks like a LOT of work! You're GOOD! Excellent creation! (:

Superb build!! Very clever!!

Very nice sharing of information in this tutorial, certainly generous to take the time out and demonstrate an overview of technique. This model once complete with textures and such, I have no doubt, will be incredible-- the base mesh alone with no textures already looks awesomely greusome!

Zbrush looks fun and fascinating. Thanks for showing us the process. Maybe down the road (much farther down the road) when I get a better feel for modeling and 3d lighting, I'll try a demo of Zbrush one day. In the meantime, I can admire all your hard work and skill and be inspired. I do like the demon approach to this character with the new horns. Without the horns I could see Nosferatu. With the horns, I'm curious about the demon. Can't wait to see it progress. I know it will be stunning when you're finished whatever you decide. Your work is marvelous and it's always a pleasure to view.

You're too hot Cal... this is really good what you do :)
GoofyFoot
Very cool Cal! I've been playing w/ Zbrush, but I keep smacking the hardware wall... lol.... I look forward to seeing the finished product. P.S. Both are cool, but my personal preference is the vampire...what can I say? I'm a sucker for the undead....

I'm going to have to go with it looking better as a demon. How awesome is the rake brush by the way? I watched one of Alex Alvarez's tutorials where he used it a lot to block in the larger forms of one of his characters, and also some of the smaller details. Such a versatile tool. Can't wait for the 3.5 and 4.0 updates. You won't need anything else in your tool set soon. Nice work as always.
mikeerson
the pose you have him in would make an excellent upload of him being at a demon bar, leaning against the bar with bottle all over the place and talking to his friends OR trying to pick up some demon babe = lol... I've never looked to see what info I can find on zbrush on the net... is there a 5 to 15 minute video on it that shows an artist making something from scratch and showing how they do it? hope you show us the next steps as well... as far as the horns, IF you're going to keep it a vampire, I'd drop the horn (even though it looks good) I'd go with the V shaped hair on the foreheand... and possibly spike the hair... mostly black put some stylized gray in the hair... the traditional old time colar would look tight ... I have to say this looks awesome but resembles a demon - if you want a vampire, the skin color will help when you get to that point - dead gray skin.

I don't understand any of what you've said at the top there but it looks awesome!

Oh wow - I've heard it said that zbrush can be a bit like pushing clay around, and seeing this makes me sorely tempted to try it (I used to build in clay and really miss doing it) It's just the thought of the learning curve trying to sort out the interface that's stopping me - I need a few weeks with nothing else to do! As far as the horns go I'm with mikeerson on this - I think they are absolutely fabulous but for a vampire they seem a tad superfluous - hang on to them for the demon your going to do next... oh yes spike the hair! Looking forward to the next instalment... and did I say spike the hair!
wolandepiphanius
This is coming along very nicely. Thank you for the tutorial also.
